Target pemerintah yang mengacu pada Rencana Pembangunan Jangka Menengah Nasional (RPJMN) Tahun 2015-2019 harus mampu memfasilitasi 5000 desa tertinggal keluar dari kategori tertinggal.1 Kemendes PDTT sebagai kementerian yang tugas dan fungsi utamanya berkaitan langsung dengan pengentasan tersebut telah mengagendakan orientasi pembangunan pada peningkatan pendapatan masyarakat dan peningkatan taraf ekonomi. Sejalan dengan visi pemerintah, di mana agenda awal fokus pada pemenuhan kebutuhan sarana dasar yang berkaitan dengan infrastruktur desa, selanjutnya prioritas pada pemberdayaan ekonomi masyarakat akan menjadi agenda utama. Rendahnya skala ekonomi dan minimnya alternatif pengelolaan produk desa merupakan bagian dari tantangan membangun kemandirian desa. Oleh sebab itu, strategi yang holistik dan sitematis sangat diperlukan dalam ikhtiar membangun desa. Strategi yang dicanangkan Kemendes PDTT adalah pembuatan sebuah Produk Unggulan Desa (Prudes) serta Produk Unggulan Kawasan Perdesaan (Prukades). Adapun tiga strategi yang lain adalah upaya pembentukan Badan Usaha Milik Desa (Bumdes), pembangunan fisik berupa embung desa, maupun sarana olah raga desa. lebih lanjut sebuah pengembangan terhadap Prudes serta Prukades yang dikelola oleh Bumdes diharapkan menjadi salah satu strategi untuk meningkatakan ekonomi desa dan menjadi basis penyedia alternatif pengelolaan hasil produk desa untuk meningkatkan nilai tambah kepada produk yang akan dihasilkan.

Oleh karena itu, diperlukan sebuah model yang dapat dijadikan panduan, sehingga pengembangan sebuah desa wisata dapat berjalan dengan baik. Buku ini menawarkan model pengembangan desa wisata yang berbasiskan pada komunitas. Model pengembangan ini merupakan hasil dari uji-implementasi tim peneliti Pusat Penelitian Sumber Daya Regional-Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (P2SDR-LIPI) di Desa Ligarmukti, Kabupaten Bogor, Jawa Barat di bawah program Laboratorium Sosial (Labsos) yang diadakan oleh Kedeputian Ilmu Pengetahuan Sosial dan Kemanusiaan (IPSK) LIPI.
