This festschrift honors Johann A. Makowsky on the occasion of his 75th birthday. Gathering 24 research articles authored by scientific companions, friends, and colleagues, it covers a broad variety of areas to which Johann A. Makowsky made significant contributions himself. These include several areas of mathematical logic and its relevance for Computer Science including Graph polynomials, Algorithms for graph invariants, Algorithms and descriptive complexity theory, complexity of real and algebraic computations, Mathematical logic, Model theory, Design and theory of databases, Logic in computer science and AI and Logic programming. The volume is enriched with 4 biographical essays, and two contributions by the celebrant himself.

This book covers both theoretical and practical results for graph polynomials. Graph polynomials have been developed for measuring combinatorial graph invariants and for characterizing graphs. Various problems in pure and applied graph theory or discrete mathematics can be treated and solved efficiently by using graph polynomials. Graph polynomials have been proven useful areas such as discrete mathematics, engineering, information sciences, mathematical chemistry and related disciplines.

The 35th International Workshop on Graph-Theoretic Concepts in Computer Science (WG 2009) took place at Montpellier (France), June 24–26 2009. About 80 computer scientists from all over the world (Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, UK, USA) attended the conference. Since1975,ithastakenplace20timesinGermany,fourtimesinTheNeth- lands, twice in Austria, as well as once in Italy, Slovakia, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, France, Norway, and the UK. The conference aims at uniting theory and practice by demonstrating how graph-theoretic concepts can be applied to various areas in computer science, or by extracting new problems from appli- tions. The goal is to present recent research results and to identify and explore directions of future research. The conference is well-balanced with respect to established researchers and young scientists. There were 69 submissions. Each submission was reviewed by at least three, and on average four, Program Committee members. The Committee decided to accept 28 papers. Due to the competition and the limited schedule, some good papers could not be accepted. Theprogramalsoincludedexcellentinvitedtalks:onegivenbyDanielKràlon “AlgorithmsforClassesofGraphswithBoundedExpansion,” the otherbyDavid Eppsteinon“Graph-TheoreticSolutionstoComputationalGeometryProblems.” The proceedings contains two survey papers on these topics.

Parameterized complexity theory is a recent branch of computational complexity theory that provides a framework for a refined analysis of hard algorithmic problems. The central notion of the theory, fixed-parameter tractability, has led to the development of various new algorithmic techniques and a whole new theory of intractability. This book is a state-of-the-art introduction to both algorithmic techniques for fixed-parameter tractability and the structural theory of parameterized complexity classes, and it presents detailed proofs of recent advanced results that have not appeared in book form before. Several chapters are each devoted to intractability, algorithmic techniques for designing fixed-parameter tractable algorithms, and bounded fixed-parameter tractability and subexponential time complexity. The treatment is comprehensive, and the reader is supported with exercises, notes, a detailed index, and some background on complexity theory and logic. The book will be of interest to computer scientists, mathematicians and graduate students engaged with algorithms and problem complexity.

The Person 1 Boris Abramovich Trakhtenbrot ( ) - his Hebrew given name is Boaz ( ) - is universally admired as a founding - ther and long-standing pillar of the discipline of computer science. He is the ?eld's preeminent distinguished researcher and a most illustrious trailblazer and disseminator. He is unmatched in combining farsighted vision, unfaltering c- mitment, masterful command of the ?eld, technical virtuosity, aesthetic expr- sion, eloquent clarity, and creative vigor with humility and devotion to students and colleagues. For over half a century, Trakhtenbrot has been making seminal contributions to virtually all of the central aspects of theoretical computer science, inaugur- ing numerous new areas of investigation. He has displayed an almost prophetic ability to foresee directions that are destined to take center stage, a decade or morebeforeanyoneelsetakesnotice.Hehasneverbeentempted toslowdownor limithisresearchtoareasofendeavorinwhichhehasalreadyearnedrecognition and honor.
