This Brief focuses on the dispersion of high-porosity particles, their entrainment into the vapor-laden stream, and the condensation of vapor onto the particles. The authors begin with a simple/static problem, focusing on transport within the particle. They go on to consider the high-resolution simulation of particles in a turbulent flow and the time-dependent evolution of the fluid-particle fields. Finally, they examine the more computationally-affordable large-eddy simulation of gas-to-particle mass-transfer. The book ends with a summary and challenges as well as directions for the area.

In this book the author presents selected challenges of thermal-hydraulics modeling of two-phase flows in minichannels with change of phase. These encompass the common modeling of flow boiling and flow condensation using the same expression. Approaches to model these two respective cases show, however, that experimental data show different results to those obtained by methods of calculation of heat transfer coefficient for respective cases. Partially that can be devoted to the fact that there are non-adiabatic effects present in both types of phase change phenomena which modify the pressure drop due to friction, responsible for appropriate modelling. The modification of interface shear stresses between flow boiling and flow condensation in case of annular flow structure may be considered through incorporation of the so called blowing parameter, which differentiates between these two modes of heat transfer. On the other hand, in case of bubbly flows, the generation of bubbles also modifies the friction pressure drop by the influence of heat flux. Presented are also the results of a peculiar M-shape distribution of heat transfer coefficient specific to flow boiling in minichannels. Finally, some attention is devoted to mathematical modeling of dryout phenomena. A five equation model enabling determination of the dryout location is presented, where the mass balance equations for liquid film, droplets and gas are supplemented by momentum equations for liquid film and two-phase core.

"This book is well organized and comprehensive . . . an eloquent and enduring statement of significant hydrodynamic principles." — AIChE Journal Microhydrodynamics concerns the flow and related phenomena pertinent to the motion of small particles suspended in viscous fluids. This text focuses on determining the motion of a particle or particles through a viscous fluid in bounded and unbounded flow. Its central theme is the mobility relation between particle motion and forces. Microhydrodynamics: Principles and Selected Applications functions as a manual that explains methods for solving particulate flows at low-Reynolds number, from analytical to computational methods. The ever-increasing growth in computational power has resulted in a similar growth in the range of solvable problems in microhydrodynamics. Suitable for graduate students in engineering and applied mathematics, this text treats the mathematical foundations and highlights the interplay of both mathematical and physical insights, guiding readers through single particle theory and problems related to multiparticle analyses.

This book offers an easy-to-understand introduction to the computational mass transfer (CMT) method. On the basis of the contents of the first edition, this new edition is characterized by the following additional materials. It describes the successful application of this method to the simulation of the mass transfer process in a fluidized bed, as well as recent investigations and computing methods for predictions for the multi-component mass transfer process. It also demonstrates the general issues concerning computational methods for simulating the mass transfer of the rising bubble process. This new edition has been reorganized by moving the preparatory materials for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computational Heat Transfer into appendices, additions of new chapters, and including three new appendices on, respectively, generalized representation of the two-equation model for the CMT, derivation of the equilibrium distribution function in the lattice-Boltzmann method, and derivation of the Navier-Stokes equation using the lattice-Boltzmann model. This book is a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students in the fields of computational methodologies for the numerical simulation of fluid dynamics, mass and/or heat transfer involved in separation processes (distillation, absorption, extraction, adsorption etc.), chemical/biochemical reactions, and other related processes.

Turbulence is one of the key issues in tackling engineering flow problems. As powerful computers and accurate numerical methods are now available for solving the flow equations, and since engineering applications nearly always involve turbulence effects, the reliability of CFD analysis depends increasingly on the performance of the turbulence models. This series of symposia provides a forum for presenting and discussing new developments in the area of turbulence modelling and measurements, with particular emphasis on engineering-related problems. The papers in this set of proceedings were presented at the 5th International Symposium on Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Measurements in September 2002. They look at a variety of areas, including: Turbulence modelling; Direct and large-eddy simulations; Applications of turbulence models; Experimental studies; Transition; Turbulence control; Aerodynamic flow; Aero-acoustics; Turbomachinery flows; Heat transfer; Combustion systems; Two-phase flows. These papers are preceded by a section containing 6 invited papers covering various aspects of turbulence modelling and simulation as well as their practical application, combustion modelling and particle-image velocimetry.
