This landmark volume combines classic and revisionist essays to explore the historiography of Sardinia’s exceptional transition from an island of the Byzantine empire to the rise of its own autonomous rulers, the iudikes, by the 1000s. In addition to Sardinia’s contacts with the Byzantines, Muslim North Africa and Spain, Lombard Italy, Genoa, Pisa, and the papacy, recent and older evidence is analysed through Latin, Greek and Arabic sources, vernacular charters and cartularies, the testimony of coinage, seals, onomastics and epigraphy as well as the Sardinia’s early medieval churches, arts, architecture and archaeology. This book examines Latin word order, and in particular the relative ordering of i) lexical verbs and direct objects (OV vs VO) and ii) auxiliaries and non-finite verbs (VAux vs AuxV). In Latin these elements can freely be ordered with respect to each other, whereas the present-day Romance languages only allow for the head-initial orders VO and AuxV. Lieven Danckaert offers a detailed, corpus-based description of these two word order alternations, focusing on their diachronic development in the period from c. 200 BC until 600 AD. The corpus data reveal that some received wisdom needs to be reconsidered: there is in fact no evidence for any major increase in productivity of the order VO during the eight centuries under investigation, and the order AuxV only becomes more frequent in clauses with a modal verb and an infinitive, not in clauses with a BE-auxiliary and a past participle. The book also explores a more fundamental question about Latin syntax, namely whether or not the language is configurational, in the sense that a phrase structure grammar (with 'higher-order constituents' such as verb phrases) is needed to describe and analyse Latin word order patterns. Four pieces of evidence are presented that suggest that Latin is indeed a fully configurational language, despite its high degree of word order flexibility. Specifically, it is shown that there is ample evidence for the existence of a verb phrase constituent. The book thus contributes to the ongoing debate regarding the status of configurationality as a language universal.

Nel 1065 i giudici di Torres donavano all’ordine di San Benedetto le chiese di S. Maria di Bubalis e S. Elia di Monte Santo con l’intero monte, costituendo così la dotazione del primo cenobio cassinese dell’isola. Quel gesto significava la loro fedeltà al papa e il loro schierarsi dalla parte della riforma ecclesiastica. Il loro diploma di donazione, ancora oggi conservato a Montecassino, costituisce il più antico documento scritto del Medioevo sardo, ma la vicenda ci è testimoniata anche nelle suggestive pagine della Chronica Casinensis di Leone Marsicano. I nomi delle chiese di S. Elia e S. Maria, presso l’attuale Siligo, vennero incisi assieme a quelle degli altri beni posseduti dai Cassinesi sul portone bronzeo del monastero laziale, come ad affermarne l’eterna stabilità. Il presente volume, che raccoglie saggi di specialisti di diverse discipline, descrive il territorio di Monte Santo e le sue chiese dalla fase di età bizantina fino a quella tardo-medievale, con un’incursione nella storia otto-novecentesca relativa alle dispute per la gestione della festa campestre di Sant’Elies.

Aus Pompeji stammen mehrere tausend informeller Wandinschriften, die bei den Ausgrabungen zwar dokumentiert, aber nur sehr selektiv untersucht wurden. Für die damals neuartige Inschriftengattung prägte man im 19. Jahrhundert den Begriff „Graffiti", der heute für eine Vielzahl ganz unterschiedlicher Schrift- und Textformen verwendet wird. Assoziationen zu modernen Graffiti-Writings und Taggings werden dabei häufig leichtfertig auf antike Graffiti übertragen. Dabei stammt ein Großteil der pompejanischen Ritzinschriften aus den Innenräumen von Wohnhäusern und wirft damit die Frage nach ihrer Akzeptanz und Wahrnehmung auf. Polly Lohmann nähert sich den antiken Graffiti im Vergleich mit ihren modernen Namenspendants einerseits, mit anderen antiken Inschriften, Texten und Bildern andererseits. Fallstudien stellen einzelne Wohnhäuser mit ihren Graffiti vor, und in kontextübergreifenden Vergleichen werden Bezüge zu anderen Text- und Bildgattungen des urbanen Raums aufgezeigt. Sie machen deutlich, dass die pompejanischen Graffiti vielfach von dem geprägt waren, was man im Alltag sah und erlebte.
