Abstract: Archaeological analyses are often based off of the investigation of spatial attributes of the archaeological record. These spatial attributes form a wide spectrum that includes artifacts, structures, site location, and site size. This paper discusses spatial analysis of archaeological attributes of Vésztő-Bikeri, Hungary, an Early Copper Age site located on the southeastern portion of the Great Hungarian Plain. This site, excavated by the Körös Regional Archaeological Project from 2000-2003, is a very important location for Hungarian archaeology as it is one of a few intensively investigated Early Copper Age sites. The transition period from the Late Neolithic to the Early Copper Age has raised serious questions for archaeologists due to the apparent social reconfiguration that occurred on the Plain during this time. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) was used to model the site of Vésztő-Bikeri and explore the spatial attributes and relationships within the site. This intra-site analysis shed light on the layout of the site, the relationship of the features of the site, and the make-up of the artifact assemblage. Although this paper represents only the beginning of such analyses, the results of clarify spatial elements of the site and demonstrate the possible uses for GIS in archaeological analysis.
