The author explains exactly what N gauge is, its history, its advantages and some of its possible disadvantages. He begins with a train set and progresses through choosing a prototype and designing a layout, to a practical demonstration of how to build a baseboard, to designs for open-topped baseboards and fiddle yards. Railway layouts often depict a branch line in a rural or urban setting, with the majority of locomotive models available representing passenger trains. However, increasingly, ready-to-run models of industrial locomotives are becoming available, providing a unique opportunity to place them into an industrial context. This highly illustrated book provides all the guidance and inspiration needed to begin placing these models in their natural, industrial environment. The book defines heavy industry and considers real-world examples from 'inside the fence', and describes the tools, materials, parts and fittings most suited to the construction of very large structures. It goes on to provide step-by-step descriptions of several build projects including a gas holder, a cooling tower and an open hearth melting shop, and shows how to make the most of resin buildings, kits and scratch-building. It also demonstrates the construction of industrial structure models in a variety of scales and explains the development of an industrial locomotove fleet, specialized rolling stock and road vehicles with which to populate an industry. Suitable for railway modellers of varying abilities and in any scale, and fully illustrated with 281 colour and 26 black & white photographs.

Planning Designing And Making Railway Layouts In A Small Space written by Richard Bardsley and has been published by Crowood this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-01 with Crafts & Hobbies categories.
If you want to build a model railway but feel constricted and frustrated because you only have a very limited amount of space available, then this is the book for you. The author demonstrates that a railway modeller need never be 'stuck for space', and shows the reader how to design and construct a rewarding layout in even the smallest of spaces. He emphasizes that once you have found a home for your layout, be it in a garden shed, a spare room, a bookcase or even the top of an ironing board, the same guiding principles apply. These are all fully explained in a very practical way and include the basic layout shapes, the importance of scale, standard and narrow gauges, fiddle yards, train length, curves and turnouts as well as track design elements such as head shunts, kickback sidings and run-round loops. There are individual chapters on: potential spaces; design principles; basic layout shapes; the art of compromise; levels, layers and shelves; planning your layout; baseboards; classic designs and micro-layouts. This fascinating book shows the reader that no matter how small the space, there is always a model railway layout that can be built in it. Aimed at all railway modellers of all levels of ability. Covers how to design, plan and construct a rewarding layout in the smallest of spaces i.e. garden shed, bookcase and even a micro-layout in a box file. Superbly illustrated with 131 colour photographs. Richard Bardsley is an experienced small-layout builder in N gauge and 00 gauge and exhibits widely at numerous shows.

Designing And Building Fiddle Yards written by Richard Bardsley and has been published by Crowood this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-31 with Crafts & Hobbies categories.
This invaluable, well-illustrated book is essential reading for all those railway modellers who are considering building a fiddle yard. The fiddle yard is a train storage area for locomotives and rolling stock that often remains out of view. For the modeller, it represents the 'rest of the railway network' and it is essential for layouts as it is somewhere for trains to 'come from' and somewhere for trains to 'go to'. This fascinating book defines what a fiddle yard is in terms of operational variety, storage and swapping trains. It demonstrates how a fiddle yard can be integrated into a model railway layout. It covers track-only fiddle yards using a single track, ladders of multiple tracks and reversing loops and considers design issues for oval and terminus layouts as well as combination fiddle yards and the importance of train length and baseboards. There are four detailed projects for the reader to build, each one providing a different fiddle yard solution. If you have ever wondered what fiddle yards are all about and whether your layout needs one, then this is the book for you.

Making Your N Gauge Railway More Realistic written by Richard Middleton and has been published by Pen and Sword Transport this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-30 with Crafts & Hobbies categories.
Railway modelling offers a unique opportunity for the modeller to construct and operate an authentic simulation of the real thing. When one creates a model railway, one should strive to embed the sense of purpose from the real railway into their model. Simply moving trains around aimlessly around a layout may be enjoyable, but it doesnt reflect how the real railway operates. There is much focus on absolute accuracy with regards to locomotives and rolling stock but far fewer modellers in general pay attention to prototypical accuracy and replicating authentic railway operations in miniature. Operating your layout in a realistic fashion is not only more authentic, but it can also be an enjoyable pastime in its own right. It gives purpose to the movement of every train on the layout and, if it involves co-operation between more than one operator, involves teamwork and good communication which can be immensely satisfying. Finally, realistic operation is supported by many other factors, a sense of time and setting, sensible track layout, correct placement of signals, the proper formation of trains, realistic civil engineering, and layout clutter. These all add to the overall atmosphere and setting of a real or fictional railway, tying it to a time and place, and making the whole ensemble more authentic and thus making the whole experience feel more real. This book is intended to help those with an interest in the BR Blue (TOPS) and Sectorisation eras present their layout in a realistic manner using easy-to-understand sketches and drawings, previously unpublished period photographs and source material from the era. This book will give the reader ideas to help their N Gauge model railway come to life.
