Magnetotelluric methods are finding increasing applications for imaging electrically conductive structures below the Earth`s surface in both industrial and academic research. In Models and Methods of Magnetotellurics, the authors provide a systematic approach to understanding the modern theory of ill-posed problems which is essential to making confident meaningful interpretation of magnetotelluric and magnetovariational soundings. The interpretation is conducted out in an interactive way, including the hypotheses tests and successive partial inversions with priority of the tippers, magnetic tensors and impedance-phases, which keeps out the destructive static effects of near-surface inhomogeneities. The efficiency of the interpretation is exemplified by new geoelectric models of the Baikal rift zone and the Cascadian subduction zone.

This book details both conventional and advanced geophysical techniques with description of the Electromagnetic (EM) based physics involved in different methodologies of magnetotellurics (MT). It offers detailed discussions of the theory of EM and MT methods, and the operation of specific instruments, including the presentation of results and their interpretation in tabular format. The chapters describe the conceptual background of MT geophysical methods along with the related instrumentation, sufficient illustrations, and the applicability of the individual methodologies supported by successful case histories. Features: Provides a comprehensive introduction to the MT–geophysical method. Covers diverse geotectonic settings with several case studies, supported by diagrams and data tables. Describes the fundamentals of uncontrollable telluric and controllable non-telluric sources used in MT surveys. Reviews MT methods with emphasis on recent improvements, recognizing both static and distortion effects and their treatment in the analysis of impedance tensors in 3-D inversion codes. Explores integrated MT interpretation coupled with seismic and potential (gravity, magnetic) geophysical methods. This book is aimed at professionals, students, and researchers in geophysics, geology, civil, mechanical, petroleum, and geothermal engineering, and other branches of earth and environmental sciences.

This volume serves as an introduction to modern magnetotellurics originating with the pioneering work of Tikhonov and Cagniard. It presents a comprehensive summary of theoretical and methodological aspects of magnetotellurics. It provides a bridge between textbooks on electrical prospecting and numerous papers on magnetotelluric methods scattered among various geophysical journals and collections. The book has been written in the terms of the theory of ill-posed problems and contains a special chapter encouraging readers to master the elements of this theory that defines the philosophy of the physical experiment. The book thus offers the connected and consistent account of the principles of magnetotellurics from that single viewpoint. The book also brings together developments from many sources and involves some little-known results developed in Russia in Tikhonov's magnetotellurics school. Of particular interest are concluding chapters of the book that demonstrate the potential of magnetotellurics in oil and gas surveys, including discovery of the Urengoy gas field in Western Siberia, one of the largest gas fields in the world. This potential also is revealed in studies of the earth's crust and upper mantle.

Electromagnetic exploration is one of the earliest and most widely used geophysical exploration techniques. Electromagnetic methods, such as magnetotelluric (MT), audio magnetotelluric (AMT), transient electromagnetic method (TEM), and controlled source electromagnetic method (CSEM), have made a great contribution to industrialization and urbanization by discovering underground deposits of various resources. Driven by the latest progress in electronics and intelligent algorithms, electromagnetic exploration is developing at a high speed. Many challenges faced by traditional geophysical methods are now solvable. Emerging sensing technology and signal processing technology greatly improves the accuracy of electromagnetic methods in many applications. At the same time, such technologies promoted the development of new geophysical theories and methods.

"3-D modeling and inversion is a reality, and not an illusion." This is the clear conclusion of the Second International Symposium on Three-Dimensional Electromagnetics held at the University of Utah in 1999. Containing papers submitted by 36 authors, this volume, by the sheer number of works, their diversity, and the truly international character of the efforts attests to the vigor with which the problems of the field are pursued today. The papers in this book are grouped in three parts: 3-D EM modeling; 3-D EM inversion; and 3-D EM in practice. They cover a wide range of topics in forward modeling and inversion based on new fast approximate approaches and new efficient solutions by integral equation, finite difference and finite elements techniques. If the 1980s were the decade of rapid development in 3D seismics, the 1990s became the decade of growing interest of practical geophysicists in 3D EM modeling and inversion methods. The contributions contained in this volume represent a snapshot of today's state-of-the-art in three-dimensional electromagnetics.
