The book helps readers develop fundamental skills in the field of biomedical illustrations with a training approach based on step-by-step tutorials with a practical approach. Medical/scientific illustration mainly belongs to professionals in the art field or scientists trying to create artistic visualization. There is not a merging between the two, even if the demand is high. This leads to accurate scientific images with no appeal (or trivial mistakes), or appealing CSI-like images with huge scientific mistakes. This gives the fundamentals to the scientist so they can apply CG techniques that give a more scientific approach creating mistake-free images. Key Features This book provides a reference where none exist. Without overwhelming the reader with software details it teaches basic principles to give readers to fundamentals to create. Demonstrates professional artistic tools used by scientists to create better images for their work. Coverage of lighting and rendering geared specifically for scientific work that is toturoal based with a practical approach. Included are chapter tutorials, key terms and end of chapter references for Art and Scientific References for each chapter.

"If I were still teaching introductory computer graphics, I would not hesitate to use this textbook as it has just the right amount of coverage of the topic for a semester course and is presented in a highly appealing manner to engage the reader." – Gary Bertoline, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Computer Graphics Technology, Purdue University, USA Graphics-based 3D modeling and animation are relevant not only in the motion picture and video game industries, but also in many other disciplines including creative arts, engineering, architecture, education, medicine, etc. Understanding the basics of 3D modeling and animation requires understanding some basic concepts in physics and math. While some books assume the readers’ prior knowledge of these concepts, but 3D Modeling & Animation: A Primer explains these important concepts in a visually engaging manner. This book is not just for university students, but for anyone with an interest in computer graphics modeling and animation. Using a Software-Agnostic approach, this book and focuses on the modeling and animation concepts spanning across multiple software platforms. Employing a balanced approach that is neither too technical nor too artistic, this book instills the need for creativity and visual composition in animation. KEY FEATURES: • Uses a simple, clear, and concise approach to explain the basics of modeling and animation • Two hundred plus vibrant images to easily understand and appreciate complex concepts • Review questions at chapter ends to help readers better review the content AUTHOR: Magesh Chandramouli is a Professor of Computer Graphics Technology at Purdue University Northwest and is a Distinguished Visiting Faculty of Computer Graphics at Feng Chia University, Taiwan. He is currently serving as the Director of Programs of the Engineering Design Graphics Division of the American Society for Engineering Education. He was a Frederick Andrews Fellow at Purdue University, West Lafayette, where he completed his Ph.D. He received Master of Science from the University of Calgary, Canada, Master of Engineering from the National University of Singapore, and B.E. from College of Engineering, Guindy, India. During the past decade, high-performance computer graphics have found application in an exciting and expanding range of new domains. Among the most dramatic developments has been the incorporation of real-time interactive manipulation and display for human figures. Though actively pursued by several research groups, the problem of providing a synthetic or surrogate human for engineers and designers already familiar with computer-aided design techniques was most comprehensively solved by Norman Badler's computer graphics laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania. The breadth of that effort as well as the details of its methodology and software environment are presented in this volume. The book is intended for human factors engineers interested in understanding how a computer-graphics surrogate human can augment their analyses of designed environments. It will also inform design engineers of the state of the art in human figure modeling, and hence of the human-centered design central to the emergent concept of concurrent engineering. In fulfilling these goals, the book additionally documents for the entire computer graphics community a major research effort in the interactive control of articulated human figures.

With the increasing popularization of the Internet, together with the rapid development of 3D scanning technologies and modeling tools, 3D model databases have become more and more common in fields such as biology, chemistry, archaeology and geography. People can distribute their own 3D works over the Internet, search and download 3D model data, and also carry out electronic trade over the Internet. However, some serious issues are related to this as follows: (1) How to efficiently transmit and store huge 3D model data with limited bandwidth and storage capacity; (2) How to prevent 3D works from being pirated and tampered with; (3) How to search for the desired 3D models in huge multimedia databases. This book is devoted to partially solving the above issues. Compression is useful because it helps reduce the consumption of expensive resources, such as hard disk space and transmission bandwidth. On the downside, compressed data must be decompressed to be used, and this extra processing may be detrimental to some applications. 3D polygonal mesh (with geometry, color, normal vector and texture coordinate information), as a common surface representation, is now heavily used in various multimedia applications such as computer games, animations and simulation applications. To maintain a convincing level of realism, many applications require highly detailed mesh models. However, such complex models demand broad network bandwidth and much storage capacity to transmit and store. To address these problems, 3D mesh compression is essential for reducing the size of 3D model representation.

This book contains mainly a selection of papers that were presented at the International Workshop on High Performance Computing/or Computer Graphics and Visualisation, held in Swansea, United Kingdom on 3-4 July 1995. The workshop was sponsored by the HEFCWI Initiative on ·Parallel Computing - Foundations and Applications·, and it has provided the international computer graphics community with a platform for: • assessing and reviewing the impact of the development of high performance computing on the progress of computer graphics and visualisation; • presenting the current use of high performance computing architecture and software tools in computer graphics and visualisation, and the development of parallel graphics algorithms; • identifying potential high performance computing applications in computer graphics and visualisation, and encouraging members of the graphics community to think about their problems from the perspective of parallelism. The book is divided into six sections. The first section, which acts as the introduction of the book, gives an overview of the current state of the art It contains a comprehensive survey, by Whitman, of parallel algorithms for computer graphics and visualisation; and a discussion, by Hansen, on the past, present and future high performance computing applications in computer graphics and visualisation. The second section is focused on the design and implementation of high performance architecture, software tools and algorithms for surface rendering.
