This book approaches the study of patterns by emphasising the processes responsible for them; it emphasises the logical format of process-to-pattern rather than the more wasteful pattern-to-process approach. The concern is primarily with two-dimensional surfaces, which is the way most maps are used for analysis. The material is organised into sections on process models responsible for point patterns, for line patterns and then for area patterns. It represents a synthesis of the work done on patterns in a number of fields and a large literature is reviewed in the process of the synthesis. In many respects this book represents a translation of complex mathematical materials into a readable and relatively simple verbal approach to the subject and thus brings the more sophisticated aspects to a larger number of students than has been done before. The reader need only have an elementary background in statistics. The basic probability theory required by the text is given in an appendix.

Spatial econometrics deals with spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity, critical aspects of the data used by regional scientists. These characteristics may cause standard econometric techniques to become inappropriate. In this book, I combine several recent research results to construct a comprehensive approach to the incorporation of spatial effects in econometrics. My primary focus is to demonstrate how these spatial effects can be considered as special cases of general frameworks in standard econometrics, and to outline how they necessitate a separate set of methods and techniques, encompassed within the field of spatial econometrics. My viewpoint differs from that taken in the discussion of spatial autocorrelation in spatial statistics - e.g., most recently by Cliff and Ord (1981) and Upton and Fingleton (1985) - in that I am mostly concerned with the relevance of spatial effects on model specification, estimation and other inference, in what I caIl a model-driven approach, as opposed to a data-driven approach in spatial statistics. I attempt to combine a rigorous econometric perspective with a comprehensive treatment of methodological issues in spatial analysis.

This book is intended as a text for a first course in stochastic processes at the upper undergraduate or graduate levels, assuming only that the reader has had a serious calculus course-advanced calculus would even be better-as well as a first course in probability (without measure theory). In guiding the student from the simplest classical models to some of the spatial models, currently the object of considerable research, the text is aimed at a broad audience of students in biology, engineering, mathematics, and physics. The first two chapters deal with discrete Markov chains-recurrence and tran sience, random walks, birth and death chains, ruin problem and branching pro cesses-and their stationary distributions. These classical topics are treated with a modem twist: in particular, the coupling technique is introduced in the first chap ter and is used throughout. The third chapter deals with continuous time Markov chains-Poisson process, queues, birth and death chains, stationary distributions. The second half of the book treats spatial processes. This is the main difference between this work and the many others on stochastic processes. Spatial stochas tic processes are (rightly) known as being difficult to analyze. The few existing books on the subject are technically challenging and intended for a mathemat ically sophisticated reader. We picked several interesting models-percolation, cellular automata, branching random walks, contact process on a tree-and con centrated on those properties that can be analyzed using elementary methods.

Pablo Gregori is senior lecturer of Statistics and Probability at the Department of Mathematics, University Jaume I of Castellon. His research fields of interest are spatial statistics, mainly on spatial point processes, and measure theory of functional analysis. Jorge Mateu is Assistant Professor of Statistics and Probability at the Department of Mathematics, University Jaume I of Castellon and a Fellow of the Spanish Statistical Society and of Wessex Institute of Great Britain. His main research interests are in stochastic geometry and spatial statistics, mainly spatial point processes and geostatistics. Radu Stoica obtained his Ph.D. in 2001 from the University of Nice Sophia Anitpolis. He works within the biometry group at INRA Avignon. His research interests are related to the study and the simulation of point processes applied to pattern modeling and recognition. The aimed application domains are image processing, astronomy and environmental sciences.
