The fierce polarization of contemporary politics has encouraged Americans to read back into their nation's past a perpetual ideological struggle between liberals and conservatives. However, in this timely book, David S. Brown advances an original interpretation that stresses the critical role of moderate statesmen, ideas, and alliances in making our political system work. Beginning with John Adams and including such key figures as Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., and Bill Clinton, Brown charts the vital if uneven progress of centrism through the centuries. Moderate opposition to both New England and southern secessionists during the early republic and later resistance to industrial oligarchy and the modern Sunbelt right are part of this persuasion's far-reaching legacy. Time and again moderates, operating under a broad canopy of coalitions, have come together to reshape the nation's electoral landscape. Today's bitter partisanship encourages us to deny that such a moderate tradition is part of our historical development--one dating back to the Constitutional Convention. Brown offers a less polemical and far more compelling assessment of our politics.

In 1958, facing court-ordered integration, Virginia's governor closed public schools in three cities. His action provoked not only the NAACP but also large numbers of white middle-class Virginians who organized to protest school closings. This compilation of essays explores this contentious period in the state's history. Contributors argue that the moderate revolt against conservative resistance to integration reshaped the balance of power in the state but also delayed substantial school desegregation. "An exquisitely timed book ... Code Red is a worthwhile exploration of the shared goals (and shared enemies) that unite moderates and progressives. But more than that, it is a sharp reminder that the common ground on which Dionne built his career has been badly eroded, with little prospect that it will soon be restored.” —The New York Times Book Review New York Times bestselling author and Washington Post columnist E. J. Dionne, Jr. sounds the alarm in Code Red, calling for an alliance between progressives and moderates to seize the moment and restore hope to America’s future for the 2020 presidential election. Will progressives and moderates feud while America burns? Or will these natural allies take advantage of the greatest opportunity since the New Deal Era to strengthen American democracy, foster social justice, and turn back the threats of the Trump Era? The United States stands at a crossroads. Broad and principled opposition to Donald Trump’s presidency has drawn millions of previously disengaged citizens to the public square and to the ballot boxes. This inspired and growing activism for social and political change hasn’t been seen since the days of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal policies and the Progressive and Civil Rights movements. But if progressives and moderates are unable—and unwilling—to overcome their differences, they could not only enable Trump to prevail again but also squander an occasion for launching a new era of reform. In Code Red, award-winning journalist E. J. Dionne, Jr., calls for a shared commitment to decency and a politics focused on freedom, fairness, and the future, encouraging progressives and moderates to explore common ground and expand the unity that brought about Democrat victories in the 2018 elections. He offers a unifying model for furthering progress with a Politics of Remedy, Dignity, and More: one that solves problems, resolve disputes, and moves forward; that sits at the heart of the demands for justice by both long-marginalized and recently-displaced groups; and that posits a positive future for Americans with more covered by health insurance, more with decent wages, more with good schools, more security from gun violence, more action to roll back climate change. Breaking through the partisan noise and cutting against conventional wisdom to provide a realistic look at political possibilities, Dionne offers a strategy for progressives and moderates to think more clearly and accept the responsibilities that history now imposes on them. Because at this point in our national story, change can’t wait.

Liberals say conservatives have blind belief in religion and the Founders. Conservatives say liberals have blind belief in government, mainstream news, and liberal leaders. Both believe the other has blind spots. Moderates of either persuasion try not to have blind spots or blind beliefs. Being human, I may have both. When I mention my beliefs in this book, I explain why I have them. If you think them blind, please let me know. Below are a few. I give reasons inside. Here is my summary of three centuries of European and American history. Around America's founding, kings controlled Europe and they did dumb and bad things. Later, socialists and communists controlled Europe and they did dumb and bad things. Currently, bureaucrats and bankers control Europe, and they are doing dumb and bad things. Meanwhile, our Founders said wait, history shows the problem isn't who controls or their goals. The problem is control. Concentrations of power are the problem. Things work out better by dispersing and balancing power. Americans stuck with that until about 1913. Then, we started copying Europe. Big mistake! Serious psychological manipulation started about then as well. My purpose is not to convince you of the above. The purpose is to convince you that we should talk about such things calmly and that such conversations are productive if approached with the right attitude and methods. The will of the people forms when people who care, sincerely talk. When I was a kid (late 40s and 50s), cowboy movies taught morals and good guys were easy to spot. They wore white hats versus black hats for villains. In this book, the only bad guys are the power-hungry and those who bully and deceive; the rest of us are various shades of good. This book helps the good get better.

In Think Moderates, Milton King makes a strong case for changing public debate from an unproductive focus on extremists, problems, and off-centered public life to a more productive focus on moderates, solutions, and balance. He shows that turning to moderates for solutions and balance is a Hobson's choice because conservatives want to take us too for backwards, and liberals want to take us too far forward. For ultra-conservatives refuse to acknowledge that significant changes have taken place in society, and ultra-liberals refuse to acknowledge that certain traditions are grounding traditions and shouldn't be discarded. Moderates turn out to be the only ones who can balance the two forces and help us regain a semblance of national equilibrium. The author acknowledges that though moderates possess the right temperament and the right attributes for the task of restoring sanity to public life, as of yet, they haven't developed the requisite group consciousness that would move them to organize and establish an adequate public persona as conservatives and liberals have. However, he sees in their current strong reaction to the out-of-control extremism an incipient group-consciousness developing within certain circles. For a number of moderate bloggers have built respectable online followings. But moderates in general are not part of this developing group consciousness. So one of his goals is to take the significant discussion going on among moderate bloggers and their followers, develop it, and make it known to a wider audience, not only among moderates but also other activists, public servants, etc. His research reveals that moderates would need to accomplish seven tasks in order to become the force majeure they should be as the majority cohort. He draws on history, philosophy, sociology, and family systems theory to make the case that one of the public roles of moderates is to be a force for balance and equilibrium. He uses the current culture war and political po

In this full biography of Gopal Krishna Gokhale reassesses the Indian political scene during the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth. In focusing on the career of the preeminent leader of his time, B. R. Nanda surveys the Indian Nationalist movement during the years 1885-1915 and especially the developments within the Indian National Congress. The author's clear account of Indo-British relations spans the administrations of Lords Curzon, Minto, and Hardinge. Through vignettes of eminent Indian contemporaries, insights into attitudes of officials, and vividly described popular reactions to British policies, he captures the spirit of India's political life at the turn of the century. B. R. Nanda interweaves his discussion of Gokhale's ideas and actions with analysis of major events of the day. He considers the ferment in Maharashtra, the social reform movement, the conflict between Moderates and Extremists in the Indian National Congress, the crisis in the Punjab in 1907, and many other important topics. His book gives rare glimpses of two great friends of India, A. O. Hume and William Wedderburn. Materials from Indian as well as British sources illuminate the pre-Gandhian phase of the conflict between British imperialism and Indian nationalism. Originally published in 1977. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. This book sheds light on these parties, which include the Gaullists and Giscardians of France, the Christian Democrats in Germany and Italy, the Conservatives in Britain and the Democratic Centre Union in Spain; the Liberal parties in these countries are also covered.
