'Above all, there was a belief in the revolution and the future, a feeling of having suddenly emerged into an era of equality and freedom.' In late 1936, the idealistic young George Orwell set out for Spain to join the Republican Army in its battle against the fascists. There he encountered a country in chaos. From the heady promises of revolutionary Barcelona to the betrayals, logistical nightmares, and petty factional conflicts, Orwell describes the war in all its gruesome detail with his characteristic flair for language. A fascinating, deeply personal account of how a movement gave up its ideals in pursuit of a victory that never came, the Homage to Catalonia is a remarkable chronicle of the Spanish Civil War. ABOUT THE SERIES: Arcturus Essential Orwell presents George Orwell's most acclaimed fiction and non-fiction titles with striking contemporary cover-designs. These unique paperback editions are wonderful collectibles which celebrate one of the most important voices of the 20th century.

'Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic Socialism as I understand it'. Thus wrote Orwell following his experiences as a militiaman in the Spanish Civil War, chronicled in Homage to Catalonia. Here he brings to bear all the force of his humanity, passion and clarity, describing with bitter intensity the bright hopes and cynical betrayals of that chaotic episode: the revolutionary euphoria of Barcelona, the courage of ordinary Spanish men and women he fought alongside, the terror and confusion of the front, his near-fatal bullet wound and the vicious treachery of his supposed allies. A firsthand account of the brutal conditions of the Spanish Civil War, George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia includes an introduction by Julian Symons in Penguin Modern Classics.

Eric Arthur Blair (1903–1950), more commonly known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English journalist, essayist, critic, and novelist most famous for his novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four” (1949) and allegorical novella “Animal Farm” (1945). His work is characterised by an opposition to totalitarianism and biting social commentary, and remains influential in popular culture today. Many of his neologisms have forever entered the English language, including "Thought Police", "Big Brother", "Room 101", "doublethink", "thoughtcrime", and "Newspeak" to name but a few. In “Homage to Catalonia”, Orwell recounts his experiences fighting in the Spanish Civil War on the side of the POUM militia of the Republican army, which would provide the inspiration and motivation for the anti-totalitarian themes that would come to pervade his writing. A fantastically detailed account of an ordinary foot soldier's life in wartime, “Homage to Catalonia” will appeal to those with an interest in socialism and is not to be missed by fans of Orwell's seminal work. Other notable works by this author include: “Keep the Aspidistra Flying” (1936) and “Coming Up for Air” (1939). Read & Co. Classics is proudly publishing this memoir now in a new edition complete with the introductory essay "Why I Write".

George Orwells' Animal Farm is a 1945 book about a group of animals on a farm who organise a revolution, and take over from their human owners to run the farm themselves. Adopting the Seven Commandments of Animalism, the animals are taught to read and write by two young pigs, Snowball, and Napoleon. As time goes on, rivalry between the two develops, which culminates in Snowball being chased away and Napoleon becoming supreme leader. Growing more authoritarian, Napoleon purges the farm, executing those animals he accuses of siding with Snowball. And as more time progresses, their motto of 'All animals are equal' gets shifted to prioritise only Napoleon and the pigs. An allegory of the Stalinist era of Russia, Orwell shows that true equality can never be, as there will always be those that rise to the top, pushing others down in the process.

George Orwell set out ‘to make political writing into an art’, and to a wide extent this aim shaped the future of English literature – his descriptions of authoritarian regimes helped to form a new vocabulary that is fundamental to understanding totalitarianism. While 1984 and Animal Farm are amongst the most popular classic novels in the English language, this new series of Orwell’s essays seeks to bring a wider selection of his writing on politics and literature to a new readership. Shooting an Elephant, the fifth in the Orwell’s Essays series, tells the story of a police officer in Burma who is called upon to shoot an aggressive elephant. Thought to be loosely based on Orwell’s own experiences in Burma, the tightly written essay weaves together fact and fiction indistinguishably, and leaves the reader contemplating the heavy topic of colonialism, with the words ‘when the white man turns tyrant it is his own freedom that he destroys’ echoing from the page. 'A remarkable piece.' (Jeremy Paxman) 'A writer who can – and must – be rediscovered with every age.' (Irish Times)
