From the team that brought you The Obstacle Is the Way and Ego Is the Enemy, a daily devotional of Stoic meditations—an instant Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestseller. Why have history's greatest minds—from George Washington to Frederick the Great to Ralph Waldo Emerson, along with today's top performers from Super Bowl-winning football coaches to CEOs and celebrities—embraced the wisdom of the ancient Stoics? Because they realize that the most valuable wisdom is timeless and that philosophy is for living a better life, not a classroom exercise. The Daily Stoic offers 366 days of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations from the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the playwright Seneca, or slave-turned-philosopher Epictetus, as well as lesser-known luminaries like Zeno, Cleanthes, and Musonius Rufus. Every day of the year you'll find one of their pithy, powerful quotations, as well as historical anecdotes, provocative commentary, and a helpful glossary of Greek terms. By following these teachings over the course of a year (and, indeed, for years to come) you'll find the serenity, self-knowledge, and resilience you need to live well.

Many people complain in the world today that things are not going the way that they want and that they are just not happy. They might get the money, get the things, and are always working hard to achieve things that they want, and still they are not feeling happy about it. The ideas of Stoicism, an idea that is discussed in length in this book, goes into more details about this unhappiness and how it can be fixed. The ancient idea of Stoicism works on the thoughts that negative emotions, such as jealousy, anger, and hatred, are destructive to the body and that the only reason people would feel this way is because they had misunderstood the situation. When you look at reason and see all of the pieces of the puzzle, you can see that your reaction was not justified and you can think in a more logical way, which leads to happiness. Chapter 1 starts out this guidebook with a general introduction to Stoicism and what it can mean for you. It discusses the idea that unlike what many modern day people think about stoics, it is not all about being indifferent about the feelings that you have and pretty much not showing emotions. Instead, Stoicism is more about seeing the whole picture before deciding to react since these intense emotions are destructive to the body and often are caused because the person is not understanding the situation. You can still have the feelings, but Stoics are better at placing the emotions and using them only when needed. Chapter 2 then goes on to discuss some of the main ideas that come with being a Stoic. There is just so much that you can learn about being a Stoic and just looking up the word is not going to be enough. As an ancient rule of thought that came about at the end of the Greek Empire, it had a lot of value to the people of that time, and you would be able to use it as well. Some of the main ideas of Stoicism that will be discussed in this chapter include logic, epistemology, ethics and virtues, spiritual exercises, social philosophy, Christianity, and how it can be used in modern times. Chapter 3 provides you with some of the basic steps that you will need to consider in order to become a Stoic. Since this is not really a religion and does not require any membership or anything like that, it is fairly easy to become a Stoic, but this chapter can give you some nice hints to get started. Chapter 4 ties in a bit with this idea by providing some of the benefits of being a Stoic and why you might consider this as a good one for your needs rather than sticking with the traditional consumerism views that seem popular now. Chapter 5 finishes out this guidebook with a discussion on how you can benefit from Stoicism, even in modern times. Most people both have the wrong views on Stoicism and so want nothing to do with it, or they feel that it is too ancient and old to do them any good. But even modern time people will be able to see some benefits of this school of thought. Some of the ways that Stoicism might be considered great even in these modern times include how it was built for the hard times since it occurred at the downfall of the Greek Empire, it was the first one to discuss the idea of globalization rather than just being true to your country, it has a lot of links to the ever popular Christianity that is prevalent, and it can be a philosophy that helps out successful leaders. There is so much that you can learn about Stoicism and it is going to be able to benefit you in so many ways. It is just important that you take the time to learn about the importance of this school of thought in order to figure out how it is going to be able to help you out and get you the things that you would like out of life. Use this guidebook in order to learn more about these amazing thoughts and begin to understand how such an ancient school of thought will be able to help you out in modern times.

The first clear and faithful guide to the timeless, practical teachings of the Stoic philosopher Seneca. Stoicism, the most influential philosophy of the Roman Empire, offers refreshingly modern ways to strengthen our inner character in the face of an unpredictable world. Widely recognized as the most talented and humane writer of the Stoic tradition, Seneca teaches us to live with freedom and purpose. His most enduring work, over a hundred “Letters from a Stoic” written to a close friend, explains how to handle adversity; overcome grief, anxiety, and anger; transform setbacks into opportunities for growth; and recognize the true nature of friendship. In Breakfast with Seneca, philosopher David Fideler mines Seneca’s classic works in a series of focused chapters, clearly explaining Seneca’s ideas without oversimplifying them. Best enjoyed as a daily ritual, like an energizing cup of coffee, Seneca’s wisdom provides us with a steady stream of time-tested advice about the human condition—which, as it turns out, hasn’t changed much over the past two thousand years.
