In Charlotte O'Farrell's "All We Lost", a group of podcasters travel to the site of an unexplained mass disappearance. While investigating the infamous mystery, they come face to face with their own worst nightmares. Who will make it out? Ancient evils, witchcraft, demons, and gods; these make up the world "Tabitha" lives within. A little girl and her mother struggle to survive these horrors to fulfil the last prophecy spoken by her people to return that which was stolen from her ancestors. Story by Derek Hawke. David Feuling stretches his experimental style to the limit through his telling of "The Lossy Incident". Reality-bending antagonists, astral projection, deepweb plotlines, and reader-interactive encryption puzzles make this story a mind-bending digital horror story truly unlike any other. Micah Edwards draws you into a budding mythos with "Alterations". A simple scratching sound in the basement leads one man on a twisted journey which bends the rules of reality itself. As gains and sacrifices mount, can he keep hold of who he was? --ABOUT MODERN DREAD-- The project that would eventually become "Modern Dread" was originally conceived as the solution to a problem. As a writer who seeks to be published consistently, I must usually plan my texts according to strictly external guidelines. A marketable story is generally one of two things. It is either quite short, or else it is the length of a complete novel. As I wrote "The Lossy Incident", I realized that I was creating something that couldn't properly fit into either of these two main categories. This was a recurring issue that I had noticed before with my other projects. The current "territory" for novella and novelette-length stories remains sparse in terms of profitability and audience opportunities. That strikes me as an absolute shame. I reached out to my fellow authors about publishing a collection of longer stories that weren't quite novels.I was humbled by the amazing response that I got from my peers. It turns out that the practice of writing novelette-style fiction remains alive and well. That fact is now what "Modern Dread" aims to celebrate.

Contemporary State Terrorism written by Richard Jackson and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-09-10 with History categories.

This volume aims to ‘bring the state back into terrorism studies’ and fill the notable gap that currently exists in our understanding of the ways in which states employ terrorism as a political strategy of internal governance or foreign policy. Within this broader context, the volume has a number of specific aims. First, it aims to make the argument that state terrorism is a valid and analytically useful concept which can do much to illuminate our understanding of state repression and governance, and illustrate the varieties of actors, modalities, aims, forms, and outcomes of this form of contemporary political violence. Secondly, by discussing a rich and diverse set of empirical case studies of contemporary state terrorism this volume explores and tests theoretical notions, generates new questions and provides a resource for further research. Thirdly, it contributes to a critical-normative approach to the study of terrorism more broadly and challenges dominant approaches and perspectives which assume that states, particularly Western states, are primarily victims and not perpetrators of terrorism. Given the scarceness of current and past research on state terrorism, this volume will make a genuine contribution to the wider field, particularly in terms of ongoing efforts to generate more critical approaches to the study of political terrorism. This book will be of much interest to students of critical terrorism studies, critical security studies, terrorism and political violence and political theory in general. Richard Jackson is Reader in International Politics at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. He is the founding editor of the Routledge journal, Critical Studies on Terrorism and the convenor of the BISA Critical Studies on Terrorism Working Group (CSTWG). Eamon Murphy is Professor of History and International Relations at Curtin University of Technology in Western Australia. Scott Poynting is Professor in Sociology at Manchester Metropolitan University.

The Age Of Insanity written by John F. Schumaker and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-08-30 with Psychology categories.

The often misunderstood modern person syndrome is a disorder linked to the conditions of living in our contemporary society. The author argues that the conditions of modernity have introduced new processes, forces, and cultural motivations that have major implications for all aspects of mental health and social well being. While modernity offers unprecedented opportunities for personal enhancement and creative expression, there is mounting evidence of a mental health crisis that demands the immediate attention of mental health professionals. In order to address the new challenges that have arisen under conditions of modernity, mental health professionals must rethink fundamental assumptions about the relationship between society and mental health, as well as the impact of modern social concerns upon individual behavior and psychological well being. This innovative approach to mental health seeks to explain a variety of psychological trends, including the steep rise in depression, the sharp increase in the prevalence of existential disorders, and the emergence of consumption disorders. By shedding light on the interaction between modernity and mental health, Schumaker illuminates the emerging patterns of mental disturbance while also offering new and more effective intervention and prevention strategies.

Landscapes Of Dread In Classical Antiquity written by Debbie Felton and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-27 with History categories.

Over the last two decades, research in cultural geography and landscape studies has influenced many humanities fields, including Classics, and has increasingly drawn our attention to the importance of spaces and their contexts, both geographical and social: how spaces are described by language, what spaces are used for by individuals and communities, and how language, use, and the passage of time invest spaces with meaning. In addition to this ‘spatial’ turn in scholarship, recent years have also seen an ‘emotive’ turn – an increased interest in the study of emotion in literature. Many works on landscape in classical antiquity focus on themes such as the sacred and the pastoral and the emotions such spaces evoke, such as (respectively) feelings of awe or tranquillity in settings both urban and rural. Far less scholarship has been generated by the locus terribilis, the space associated with negative emotions because of the bad things that happen there. In short, the recent ‘emotive’ turn in humanities studies has so far largely neglected several of the more negative emotions, including anxiety, fear, terror, and dread. The papers in this volume focus on those neglected negative emotions, especially dread – and they do so while treating many types of space, including domestic, suburban, rural and virtual, and while covering many genres and authors, including the epic poems of Homer, Greek tragedy, Roman poetry and historiography, medical writing, paradoxography and the short story.
