Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from Modern Etchings and Their Collectors Last but not least, to a friend, who at my request has written the Introductory Chapter to this book, who is a lover of fine prints, and who has frequently helped me with advice on matters relating to them. The photogravure process which has been used for the illustrations was considered the most suitable for the particular etchings which have been reproduced. NO mechanical process can approximate original work. It would be lamentable if it did. This process, however, gives some idea Of the beauty of the originals without detracting from the skill of the Artists by too closely resembling original work. Excerpt from French Etching From Meryon to Lepère, Being a Lecture Delivered to the Print Collectors Club But I pass on, after this brief retrospect, to the actual subject of my lecture, the etchers of the modern French School. I have often thought, since I chose the subject, that it is wrong to detach the etching, for separate treatment, from the lithograph. The unity of French art seems to protest against the involuntary schism. There have been great lithographers, of course, who never etched a plate, and great etchers who never used the lithographic chalk. What has Daumier, it may justly be asked, to do with Meryon? But again and again, in thinking of French graphic artists of the later nineteenth century, I have felt myself tempted to give special praise to the lithographs of men whom it was here my task to consider as etchers only. The history of the modern French school of etching may be said to begin in 1850. That is the date of the first mature etching by Meryon, the earliest of his "Eaux-Fortes sur Paris," "Le Petit Pont." There had been modern French etchers, it is true, before Meryon. Blery, who taught him the metier, was no great artist, but two, at least, of the Barbizon School of painter-etchers, Daubigny and Jacque, were etching long before 1850, and have a higher claim on our respect than Blery. Neither of these, however, was of outstanding eminence as an etcher. Daubigny's pleasant landscapes make no mark on history. Jacque's scenes of rustic life, his groups of sheep, pigs or chickens do not surpass, if they even reach, the average of Dutch etchings in the age of Adriaen van de Velde and Potter, and the modern collector is interested rather in his dry-points, which are full of a poetry and charm that surprise us in the forties. From the INTRODUCTION.The importance of the Graphic Arts to-day is beyond question, and the appreciation of drawings and prints seems to gather strength rather than to diminish. The discriminating collection of drawings, etchings, lithographs and wood-engravings was never more eagerly pursued. The number of print-collectors increases astonishingly, their zest being stimulated by the informed work of numerous writers who have successfully engaged the sustained and enthusiastic interest of the lover of fine prints in achievements of the Masters of the past equally with those of the modern artist. Especially definite at the moment is the wide appreciation of etchings, not only by wealthy connoisseurs whose collections embrace the finest and rarest of prints, but also by collectors with limited means, whose discernment enables them to acquire, at a moderate price, work that will stand the test of later judgment. Much has been written about the qualities that distinguish a fine etching, but these are best ascertained by studying closely and sympathetically the finest examples. Some knowledge of technical qualities and methods is most necessary to the would-be connoisseur, for every one of the processes by which prints are made has a definite character entirely its own, the appreciation of which should govern the formation of the collection. It is most instructive to compare fine examples in various mediums -- for example, the hard brilliance of a burin line with the more expressive bitten line, whether it be the free open line so insisted upon by Haden, or the rigid line of Meryon. Only by this study and comparison can the collector understand the great gulf between the beautiful deep tonal qualities of Samuel Palmer's few prints and the delicate web-like tracery of Whistler's etchings, or the sonorous strength of Brangwyn's great plates and the rich bur of an early impression in a dry-point by Muirhead Bone, to discover the fine qualities of each. In the same way will be learned the distinction between the inherent qualities of an aquatint, depending as it should on the correct relation of its bitten tones, and of a fine mezzotint wrought with subtle gradations. To what end the modern etcher's expression is tending it is difficult to predict; certainly it has been but little affected by the recent movements that have so violently disturbed the traditions of painting. The value of an etching as decoration is well understood to-day, for though collectors may still place their best-loved prints in solander box or portfolio, yet their treasures are much more likely to be hung upon a wall. A fine etching, in addition to the beauty of its line, will to a great extent suggest colour. Perhaps this may account for the great attraction that etching has exercised on so many fine painters who have, with a just recognition of the limitations of the medium and a correct selective faculty, frequently obtained through the etched or dry-point line a perfectly expressed individuality.

Excerpt from A Short History of Engraving Etching: For the Use of Collectors and Students With Full Bibliography Classified List and Index of Engravers I owe a word of apology for augmenting the already extensive bibliography of engraving, and some explanation of the scope of my work may serve to supply it. It aims, in the first place, at presenting a descriptive survey of the history of engraving on metal throughout the various centuries and schools, considerable space being devoted to the more important engravers, the names of lesser account being cited just so far as they contribute towards a connected view of the whole development, and a balanced estimate of relative artistic values. It is especially in this relation that I feel the importance of the inclusion of a chapter on modern etchers and engravers, who, in books of this kind, have seldom been treated in their natural place beside the older masters. While recognising the greater dangers of personal bias in expressing opinion on the work of living artists, I am strongly opposed to the idea that modern art demands a different and separate treatment. I have attempted throughout to give references to original sources and best authorities, so that, both for lesser and greater artists, the student may find a sign-post when space precludes direct information. The General Bibliography, and the Individual Bibliography attached to the Index of Engravers, present a much larger collection of authorities than has been attempted in any similar publication. The technical introduction merely aims at describing the various processes in sufficient detail to help the student, who has made no practice of the art, to a clear comprehension of cause and effect.
