Excerpt from Modern Germany Her Historians When studying the history of the growth of German Unity, one is struck by the important part played in it by the historians: they were the promoters of that National-Liberal policy which reached its triumphant climax after the victories of 1866 and 1870. They made this policy possible by preparing the nation for it by their doctrines: they became, later, the leaders of that German public opinion which betrayed itself, with such jealous nationalism, in the Luxemburg question. "Without their co-operation," the economist Schmoller said with justice, "the Empire could never have been set upon its feet." Again, Lord Acton said, "They brought history into touch with the nation's life, and gave it an influence it had never possessed out of France; and won for themselves the making of opinions mightier than laws." The Germans were the first to recognize what they owed to their historians. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Germany Since 1740 The rise of modern Germany has long attracted the interest of American readers, but interest has often been baffled by the complexities of German state and national life and by the mass of detail which historians have in cluded in their accounts of Germany. Many Americans de sire, I believe, an introduction to German history. I have attempted to meet this desire by choosing the most inter esting period from the accessions of Maria Theresa and Frederick the Great in I 740 down to recent times and presenting only the most important events of this period. Both for facts and for ideas I am indebted to German as well as English printed sources and to numerous Prince ton friends and colleagues. More particular gratitude has been richly merited by Professor Sidney B. Fay of Smith College, who read the manuscript of the whole book with exceeding care and offered many acute observations and suggestions. To John H aughton Coney I can no longer voice acknowledgment of the stimulus which his counsel always gave, for he is gone, and Princeton and American historical science have lost one of their noblest spirits. Excerpt from Modern Germany: Her Political and Economic Problems, Her Foreign and Domestic Policy, Her Ambitions, and the Causes of Her Success, Third and Very Greatly Enlarged Edition, Completely Revised and Brought Up to February 1999 The present edition is a greatly enlarge one. The last five chapters are new, and as four of them deal with German Economic Policy, Finances, Labour Conditions, the Effect of British Fiscal Reform on Anglo-German Relations, &c., they may prove useful at a time when British economic policy is being generally discussed. "Modern Germany" has been widely read, not only in Great Britain and America, but also in many foreign countries. Only a few weeks ago, a Japanese translation was published by Mr. Akasaka in Tokyo, and, in a special introduction, the celebrated educationalist, Mr. Kamada, the President of the Keiwo University, wrote: "Many books in many languages have appeared which describe the activity and progress of Modern Germany, but most of these give only fragmentary views of the country. Mr. Ellis Barker gives us a comprehensive picture of Modern Germany, and I think that his is the best book on the subject. Although 'Modern Germany' was primarily intended to enable Englishmen to profit from Germany's example, Japanese readers also will find it full of suggestive information which will assist them in solving the political, educational, economic, naval, military, agricultural, and industrial problems of their country." Excerpt from History of the German People, Vol. 12: From the First Authentic Annals to the Present Time; Modern Germany; The Downfall and the Restoration, 1786-1848 What a life! Exclaimed Niebuhr, without affection, patriotism and joy, with hatred and discontent, must exist under such conditions be tween government and subjects! Yet men like Arndt suffered these trials without being un faithful to their king or their belief, even for a moment. In the great mass of the people, too, the faith in the king remained unshaken. They understood the mind of the king, although they did not know that the king once answered his garrison preacher, who delivered a very frank sermon on the text, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do! By asking: Can I always do what I want? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Modern Germany: Its Rise, Growth, Downfall and Future The Hohenzollern rulers, considering the country their property, administered it in accordance with ancient custom as if it were a huge estate. They directed absolutely, and as a rule in person, the army, the civil administration, the foreign and domestic policy of the State, industry, trade, and commerce, the Protestant and the Roman Catholic Churches, the schools, the universities, and the press. They not only controlled and directed all the activities of the State, but they moulded the character of the people and controlled the speech, thought, and action of the citizens from the cradle to the grave.
