Following Phaidon's hugely popular Modern House(1993), Modern House 2is a survey of the world's most innovative contemporary houses. Organized thematically, it examines over 30 houses, considering contemporary issues such as ecological concerns, changing patterns of living, building with sensitivity in increasingly populated cities, and respecting the environment when building in isolated rural areas. It also discusses concept houses for the future, focusing on international competition designs or commissions for 'model houses' and offers an insight into future possibilities for domestic architecture. Architects featured include Glenn Murcutt, Office for Metropolitan Architecture, Foster and Partners, Williams and Tsien, Günter Behnisch, Patkau Architects, SANAA, Herzog & de Meuron, Marcos Acayaba and Gabriel Poole. Modern House 2responds to an increasing level of knowledge and sophistication about design and environmental issues to illustrate that striking and innovative design can be achieved within the framework of concerns about everyday living patterns that affect us all.

The modern House reflects upon the complicated relationship architecture has with the terms "Modernist", "Modernism" and "Modern" specifically in relation to the potent concept of the home, reflecting in part the narrative of how some of the most important examples of Modern houses were commissioned and built in the UK. These special examples of British Modernism include such progressive experiments on communal urban living as London's Isokon Building, completed in 1934 by eminent architect Wells Coates, and Berthold Lubetkin's Highpoint, which is today considered one of the most prominent examples of the early International Style. Compared with these urban enormities are private houses, such as the Laslett House in Cambridge, 1958, by the architect Trevor Dannatt, or the Winter House, designed by John Winter as his own residence. Included are an extended introductory essay by acclaimed architectural journalist Jonathan Bell, former architecture editor for Wallpaper* and contributing editor at Blueprint, and projects such as those designed by renowned architect Carl Turner, responsible for the low energy Slip House, a cantilevered sculptural abode of translucent glass, steel and concrete. With images of yet to be seen interiors and restorations, The Modern House illuminates the convergent characteristics of functionalism, truth to materials, flowing space and natural light within the Modern home as a space for living.

Find happiness at home with five guiding principles from cultural phenomenon THE MODERN HOUSE. 'A source of fascination, inspiration and fantasy' Guardian In 2005, childhood friends Matt Gibberd and Albert Hill set out to convince people of the power of good design and its ability to influence our wellbeing. They founded The Modern House - in equal parts an estate agency, a publisher and a lifestyle brand - and went on to inspire a generation to live more thoughtfully and beautifully at home. As The Modern House grew, Matt and Albert came to realise that the most successful homes they encountered - from cleverly conceived studio flats to listed architectural masterpieces - had been designed with attention to the same timeless principles: Space, Light, Materials, Nature and Decoration. In this lavishly illustrated book, Matt tells the stories of these remarkable living spaces and their equally remarkable owners, and demonstrates how the five principles can be applied to your own space in ways both large and small. Revolutionary in its simplicity, and full of elegance, humour and joy, this book will inspire you to find happiness in the place you call home. Beaumaris Modern 2 written by Fiona Austin and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11 with categories.

In reality, the first Beaumaris Modern book, featuring Mid Century Modern houses of Beaumaris just scraped the surface of what was out there. And, fortunately, in the past few years many more of these unique architect-designed houses have been discovered-- thankfully surviving the developer's wrecking ball. The houses in Beaumaris are often modest, hiding behind Tea Tree filled gardens and only found by word-of-mouth. In other instances, the authors have patiently waited for the enthusiastic owners to complete their restoration or renovation which then made them more suitable for photography. Book Two features a range of these freshly discovered houses, some restored and others renovated by a contemporary architect--one in particular has been owned by the one family for almost 70 years. Like the first book, the photography by two of Australia's leading architectural photographers, Derek Swalwell and Jack Shelton, capture the essence of these house with beautifully composed interior and exterior images. Biographies of the architects have been carefully researched by heritage architect, Simon Reeves, who manages to unearth previously undisclosed details about each architect. Fiona Austin has written the stories about the houses from both research and interviews with current and previous owners. The stories range from how owners rescued the house, to some engaging a contemporary architect to develop a sympathetic renovation. Also included are details on the interiors, furniture and gardens. So, plenty to read, absorb and inspire. With floor plans to assist in visualising the layout of each house in addition to the visual delight of the photography.
