There is increasing dissatisfaction, among both specialists and patients, with hospital-based antenatal care and a recurrent finding in lay comments about obstetric care has been satisfaction with general practice and midwife involvement. General practitioners themselves are beginning to realize that the antenatal and postnatal period of a woman's life is very central to their role as family doctors. Two recent reports in the UK have concluded that specialist antenatal and postnatal care should on the whole be concentrated on high-risk patients and that the vast majority of care could and should be done by community-based primary health care teams. Thus all general practitioners need to update and reassess their antenatal, puerperial, and postnatal care. Both reports recommended greater use of existing general practice delivery facilities and that all specialist units should provide facilities for general practitioners to look after their own patients in labour. The general practitioner emphasis must be on 'normalizing' obstetrics where possible and, most importantly, responding to the women's requests and suggestions. This book will fire the enthusiasm of all GPs with an interest in obstetrics. There are contributions from many disciplines including GPs, specialists, health visitors and midwives.

This book is a comprehensive and easy-to-read guide to obstetrics and gynecology in developing countries. Although significant progress has been made towards the reduction of maternal mortality and morbidity globally, they are still unacceptably high in developing countries. This can be directly or indirectly tied to poor quality maternal health care and lack of access to cost-effective, comprehensive healthcare. Health practitioners in developing countries also contend with trying to keep abreast of recent developments in obstetrics and gynecology while dealing with lack of time, resources, and access to relevant information. This textbook was thus created by experts in obstetrics and gynecology with extensive experience in African clinical settings and consultants in developed countries to teach proper and accurate diagnosis, treatment and management of gynecologic and obstetric health issues within the context of developing countries. This second edition has been fully updated throughout with an added 25+ chapters that cover topics such as reproductive health, gynecological cancers and research methods. The book is divided into six sections: Women’s Reproductive Health; Obstetrics; Medical and Surgical Disorders in Pregnancy; General Gynecology; Gynecological Malignancies; Health Systems Organization, Research Methodology and Biostatistics. These section topics have been carefully covered by expert authors with the use of valid scientific data, policy instruments, and adapted to the cultural and social context of developing countries, with particular in depth coverage of conditions that have greater prevalence and incidence in developing countries. Each chapter also focuses on filling gaps in knowledge with a distinct pedagogical approach, starting with a set of learning objectives and ending with key takeaways for the chapter. This is an ideal guide for residents, medical students, practitioners of obstetrics and gynecology, midwives, general practitioners, and pediatricians, particularly those working in developing companies.

Before World War II, the great majority of practicing doctors in England and Wales were general practitioners. They performed their own surgery, and were accustomed to treating a wide variety of illnesses and symptoms. Specialists were few in number, tended to practice in large towns, and were often associated with major hospitals. But rapidly changing medical institutions and services in the twentieth century have compelled specialization even among more modest doctors and hospitals.

This is the definitive textbook on the widely used vacuum extraction technique for operative vaginal delivery in obstetric practice. It is written by two of America's foremost obstetricians, Drs. John Patrick O'Grady and Martin L. Gimovsky, in collaboration with Doctor of Jurisprudence Cyril J. McIlhargie, who state in their preface: "Vacuum extraction has become an increasingly popular delivery technique. . . . Despite the similarities between vacuum extraction and forceps operations, skill in the use of forceps does not guarantee similar expertise in vacuum extraction. Specialized training is essential. . . . Most residency education and continuing medical education programs do not prepare students adequately . . . "For these reasons, we believe there is a need for new educational materials concerning all aspects of instrumental delivery including vacuum extraction. This has led us to prepare this clinically oriented monograph, including what we believe to be reasonable and appropriate guidelines for vacuum extraction delivery in American obstetric practice. . . . the text includes a discussion of the risks and benefits of instrumental vaginal delivery and a brief review of pertinent legal issues. We trust that this book will assist clinicians in developing their skills in vacuum-assisted delivery and will contribute to the improvement of obstetric care."

The Gynaeciorum libri, a compendium of ancient and contemporary texts on gynaecology, is the inspiration for this intensive exploration of the origins of a subfield of medicine. Focusing on its readers in the period from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, when men and women were in competition for control over childbirth, Helen King sheds new light on how the claim of female difference was shaped by specific social and cultural conditions.
