The novel was once upon a time the genre women felt at home in. This wide- ranging and detailed study of contemporary novelists explores the forms of nostalgia (shared by many feminist critics) for a 'woman's novel'; and the subtle or savage strategies which have turned the house of fiction upside down. The result is a critique of the nature of narrative now; and a celebration of the energies that are undoing our definitions of women's work.

Million-copy NYT bestseller! "Fiction at its best!" —New Woman magazine “Bestsellers like Decades, Husbands And Lovers and Love And Money have established Ruth Harris as one of the frankest, most stylish, and most compelling voices in contemporary fiction." —Chicago Sun-Times Meet three modern women—and the men in their lives. Jane Gresch: Her delicious revenge on her lying, cheating, thieving ex makes her rich and famous, but then what?? Lincky Desmond: Smart, beautiful and hard working, she marries Mr. Right—but risks it all for Mr. Oh-so-wrong. Elly McGrath: When her husband dumps her for another, younger woman, she doesn’t get mad. She gets even. Owen Casals: He is handsome, horny, and magnetic. Everyone knows it—and so does he. "Funny, sad, vivid, and raunchy. Harris seeks to enliven and entertain, and she does it in spades." —Cleveland Plain-Dealer “Glory be! Excellent. This is the story of today’s women.” —Los Angeles Times Ruth Harris is “brilliant, trenchant, chic and ultra-sophisticated, a writer who has all the intellect of Mary McCarthy, all the insight of Joan Didion.” —Fort Worth Star-Telegram "Excellent! Thoroughly delightful!" —Los Angeles Times "Author Ruth Harris' rapier wit spices up a coming-of-age-in-the-sexist-'60s story. Funny, sad, vivid, and more than raunchy enough to satisfy the most ribald appetites. Harris seeks to enliven and entertain, and she does it in spades." —Cleveland Plain-Dealer "Ruth Harris has written a superb 'rags to riches' story. Harris creates characters that are alive and familiar. These three women, Lincky, Jane and Elly, are like old friends, women we've all known. Their experiences, hopes and fears are universal and, yet, like most modern women they, too, wonder if they will find the right man and or how to get rid of the wrong one. Each in their own way finds success at the top and a successful relationship. You'll love MODERN WOMEN." —West Coast Review of Books “Bestsellers like Decades, Husbands And Lovers and Love And Money have established Ruth Harris as one of the frankest, most stylish, and most compelling voices in contemporary fiction." —Chicago Sun-Times MODERN WOMEN was originally published in hard cover and paperback by St. Martin's Press. New Approaches To Translation Conflict And Memory written by Lucía Pintado Gutiérrez and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-10 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This interdisciplinary edited collection establishes a new dialogue between translation, conflict and memory studies focusing on fictional texts, reports from war zones and audiovisual representations of the Spanish Civil War and the Franco Dictatorship. It explores the significant role of translation in transmitting a recent past that continues to resonate within current debates on how to memorialize this inconclusive historical episode. The volume combines a detailed analysis of well-known authors such as Langston Hughes and John Dos Passos, with an investigation into the challenges found in translating novels such as The Group by Mary McCarthy (considered a threat to the policies established by the dictatorial regime), and includes more recent works such as El tiempo entre costuras by María Dueñas. Further, it examines the reception of the translations and whether the narratives cross over effectively in various contexts. In doing so it provides an analysis of the landscape of the Spanish conflict and dictatorship in translation that allows for an intergenerational and transcultural dialogue. It will appeal to students and scholars of translation, history, literature and cultural studies.

This smash bestseller about privileged Vassar classmates shocked America in the sixties and remains “juicy . . . witty . . . brilliant” (Cosmopolitan). At Vassar, they were known as “the group”—eight young women of privilege, the closest of friends, an eclectic mix of vibrant personalities. A week after graduation in 1933, they all gather for the wedding of Kay Strong, one of their own, before going their separate ways in the world. In the years that follow, they will each know accomplishment and loss in equal measure, pursuing careers and marriage, experiencing the joys and traumas of sexual awakening and motherhood, all while suffering through betrayals, infidelities, and sometimes madness. Some of them will drift apart. Some will play important roles in the personal dramas of others. But it is tragedy that will ultimately unite the group once again. A novel that stunned the world when it was first published in 1963, Mary McCarthy’s The Group found acclaim, controversy, and a place atop the New York Times bestseller list for nearly two years for its frank and controversial exploration of women’s issues, social concerns, and sexuality. A blistering satire of the mores of an emergent generation of women, The Group is McCarthy’s enduring masterpiece, still as relevant, powerful, and wonderfully entertaining fifty years on. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Mary McCarthy including rare images from the author’s estate.

This collection of essays highlights cultural features and processes which characterized translation practice under the dictatorships of Benito Mussolini (1922-1940) and Francisco Franco (1939-1975). In spite of the different timeline, some similarities and parallelisms may be drawn between the power of the Fascist and the Francoist censorships exerted on the Italian and Spanish publishing and translation policies. Entrusted to European specialists, this collection of articles brings to the fore the “microhistory” that exists behind every publishing proposal, whether collective or individual, to translate a foreign woman writer during those two totalitarian political periods. The nine chapters presented here are not a global study of the history of translation in those black times in contemporary culture, but rather a collection of varied cases, small stories of publishers, collections, translations and translators that, despite many disappointments but with the occasional success, managed to undermine the ideological and literary currents of the dictatorships of Mussolini and Franco.
