Kinder- und Jugendliteratur der Gegenwart – Ein Handbuch ist eine völlig veränderte Ausgabe von dem zweibändigen Taschenbuch der Kinder- und Jugendliteratur, das seit dem Jahr 2000 auf dem Markt ist und gegenwärtig in der 4. Auflage vorliegt. Während das Taschenbuch seinen Schwerpunkt auf die historische Gesamtentwicklung der Kinder- und Ju-gendliteratur legte, rückt das neue Handbuch die KJL der Gegenwart in der Vordergrund. Diese Beschränkung der Darstellung auf die Zeit nach 1945 ist einleuchtend, denn das Ende der Nazi-Zeit und der verheerende Zweite Weltkrieg bedeuteten auch für die Entwicklung der KJL einen tiefen Einschnitt. Hinzu kommt, dass zahlreiche Texte der 1950er und 1960er Jahre nicht ,überholt' sind, sondern bei den Leserinnen und Leser bis heute ihre große Beliebtheit behalten haben; man denke nur an die Kinderbücher von Otfried Preußler oder Michael Ende. Schließlich haben gerade die Adressaten dieses Handbuchs, die Studierenden, Referendare, Lehrerinnen und Lehrer, für die KJL der Gegenwart ein besonderes Interesse, da diese in Studium, Ausbildung und Schule eindeutig im Vordergrund steht. Das neue Handbuch der Kinder- und Jugendliteratur der Gegenwart gliedert sich in vier Teile: 1. In den Grundlagen, die als Einführung gedacht sind, geht es einmal um die Terminologie und zum anderen um einen Überblick über die historische Entwicklung der Kinder- und Jugendliteratur in der Bundesrepublik und in der DDR seit 1945. 2. Das Kapitel über die Gattungen ist naturgemäß das umfangreichste. In 15 Artikeln werden die wichtigsten Gattungen dargestellt. Sie sind wie die Medienartikel vergleichbar aufgebaut: Definition, Geschichte, Typologie, Merkmale und Strukturen sowie didaktische Aspekte. 3. Die Kinder- und Jugendliteratur der Gegenwart besitzt in den Medien eine außerordentlich wichtige Verbreitungs- und Aktualisierungsmöglichkeit; das wird vor allem im Verbund mit den sich immer schneller verändernden, technischen Medien' deutlich. Wichtig bleiben aber nach wie vor der Kinderfilm, das Kindertheater, die Hörmedien und die Kinder- und Jugend-Zeitschriften. 4. Die Bedeutung der Kinder- und Jugendliteratur in der literarischen Sozialisation, d.h. in der Familie, den Vorschuleinrichtungen und der Schule, ist immens. Hier werden Entwicklungen angebahnt, die für die Kinder und Jugendlichen lebensbestimmend sind. Zahlreiche empirische Untersuchungen machen das überzeugend deutlich. Damit die Kinder- und Jugendliteratur ihre wichtige Funktion in der Schule erfüllen kann, bedarf es besonderer didaktischer Entscheidungen und methodischer Verfahren, die hier ausführlich vorgestellt werden.
