Dit boek behandelt de moderne Nederlandse gerechtsgebouwen vanuit het gebruikersperspectief. Wat waren de redenen om het recente bouwprogramma uit te voeren en hoe drukken de gebouwen als gerechtsgebouw hun functie uit? Via een vergelijking met de gebouwen van een eeuw eerder wordt duidelijk wat de overeenkomsten en verschillen zijn tussen moderne en klassieke gerechtsgebouwen. Het boek belicht de gebouwen als expressie van ideeën over recht en rechtspraak, architectuur en de organisatie van het bouwen voor de rijksoverheid, heden ten dage en een eeuw geleden. In grote lijnen is men erin geslaagd om een reeks gebouwen neer te zetten die voldoen aan de gestelde functionele eisen. Maar er zijn ook critici, die zeggen dat de functie van deze gebouwen minder duidelijk wordt uitgedrukt en dat ze minder betekenisvol zijn dan hun voorgangers. Ros Floor gaat na wat hierin de rol is geweest van de politiek, opdrachtgevers (Rechtspraak en Rijksvastgoedbedrijf) en ontwerpers.

Tussen 1870 en 1914 heeft het Nederlandse ministerie van Justitie een fascinerend bouwprogramma uitgevoerd voor de rechtspraak, het gevangeniswezen en de penitentiaire jeugdzorg, één van de grote bouwprogramma's van de rijksoverheid in die tijd. Tijdens de modernisering van het rechtsstelsel werden 44 gerechtsgebouwen, 21 gevangenissen en huizen van bewaring, 2 rijksopvoedingsgestichten, 5 tuchtscholen en talrijke gebouwen voor de rijkswerkinrichtingen in Veenhuizen gerealiseerd en verscheidene verbouwingen uitgevoerd. Gedurende deze Justitiële bouwgolf kwamen veel meer gebouwen tot stand dan in eerdere en latere decennia. 00.

Vanaf de vestiging van de Soevereine Raad in 1580 tot aan de opheffing van het arrondissement Roermond per 31 december 2012 is Roermond een belangrijk zelfstandig centrum van rechtspraak geweest. Meer dan 200 jaar lang sprak de Soevereine Raad, ook aangeduid als Hof van Gelre, in hoogste instantie recht binnen het tot de Zuidelijke Nederlanden behorende Overkwartier van Roermond. Eind 1795 werd Roermond de vestigingsplaats van een moderne rechtbank, gebaseerd op de principes van de scheiding der machten. Na het vertrek van de Fransen, begin 1814, werkte de rechtbank achtereenvolgens onder Geallieerd, Groot-Nederlands, Belgisch, Nederlands/Duitse Bond en uiteindelijk in 1867 volledig Nederlands gezag. Dit boek behandelt chronologisch en thematisch belangrijk aspecten van de rechtspraak uit de periode 1580-2012. Het bevat tevens biografieën van presidenten en andere markante figuren die in de loop der tijd aan de Roermondse arrondissementsrechtbank en haar voorlopers verbonden zijn geweest.

The Jewish Orphanage in Leiden was the last one of 8 such care homes to open its doors in The Netherlands before the Second World War. After spending almost 39 years in an old and utterly inadequate building in Leiden's city centre, the inauguration in 1929 of a brand-new building, shown on the front cover, was the start of a remarkably productive and prosperous period. The building still stands there, proudly but sadly, to this day: the relatively happy period lasted less than 14 years. On Wednesday evening, 17th March 1943, the Leiden Police, under German instructions, closed down the Orphanage and delivered 50 children and 9 staff to the Leiden railway station, from where they were brought to Transit Camp Westerbork in the Northeast of the country. Two boys were released from Westerbork thanks to tireless efforts of a neighbour in Leiden; one young woman survived Auschwitz, and one young girl escaped to Palestine via Bergen-Belsen. The 55 others were deported to Sobibor, not one of them survived. Some 168 children lived in the new building at one time or another between August 1929 and March 1943. This book reconstructs life in the orphanage based on the many stories and photographs which they left us. It is dedicated to the memory of those who perished in the holocaust, but also to those who survived. Without them this book could not have been written.
