Combining biomedical, psychological, and anthropological approaches to intergenerational incestuous violence experienced by rural indigenous [and] peasant women in the Andean region, this book raises new questions surrounding humanness and the normalisation of sexual violence. Through original ethnographical research, the author analyses Andean understandings of incest, medical positivist practices, as well as the psychiatric ‘treatment’ of incestuous and gender-based violence. The book examines the implications that psychiatric institutionalisation within the context of interethnic, gender, and class schemes, has on what it means to be human. It also draws on a theoretical framework in order to understand how discourses shape, and are simultaneously problematized by individual experiences of sexual violence and incest. Intergenerational incestuous violence against women is not necessarily an exceptional event, but can be an ordinary process, one where through the articulation of biomedical and indigenous medicine, as well as indigenous and mestizo forms of administration of political power, women as subjects can become possible. This book will appeal to scholars and students with an interest in gender-based violence, as well as mental-health practitioners and academics in Latin American studies, anthropology, gender studies, and sociology.

A lo largo de tres periodos, distanciados entre sí, y con un total de seis meses, realicé una experiencia de voluntariado en Mwuala, condado de Machakos, en Kenia. Éstas se constituyeron en parte como una sucesión de campañas etnográficas que se desarrollaron en el contexto de un proyecto de desarrollo financiado en una parte por del CMLI de la Universidad de Granada, al menos, en una primera fase. Debido a la vocación de investigación en antropología , la convivencia con la comunidad kamba rural de la región se convirtió en un inesperado ejercicio de inmersión cultural que, como consecuencia, se repitió en dos ocasiones. A las tareas propias del proyecto de alfabetización que se llevaba para la infancia del lugar se unió el diseño de un análisis, a priori general, desde una observación participante, y particular, tras indagar en aquellas cuestiones que más curiosidad e interés suscitaron. Aunque había desarrollado distintas etnografías, fundamentándome para ello en el trabajo de campo en áreas rurales, el reto que se presentaba ante mí suponía un desafío de dimensiones más amplias. Por un lado, me situaba ante un contexto que divergía sobremanera de lo conocido previamente. Por otro lado, el tiempo que iba a convivir con las familias pertenecientes al grupo étnico que refería previamente era limitado e inferior a las anteriores experiencias. De igual forma, el ángulo de separación cultural entre el observador y el grupo observado se mostraba profundamente abierto, cargado de distancias y desconocimiento. La construcción de la otredad se mostraba cargada de amplias dificultades, comenzando por la lengua. De por sí, las lenguas bantúes resultan distantes y dificultosas para quienes no estamos familiarizados con ellas. Además, aunque el inglés se presume como una de las lenguas oficiales de Kenia, el conocimiento de ésta por parte de la población rural es limitado. Esto se incrementaba aún más en el caso de las mujeres y los/las menores. Como consecuencia, la información obtenida tuvo que ser sometida a decodificaciones múltiples y concéntricas que contribuyeron a su resultado final

Brightly colored and intricately designed, molas have become popular with buyers across the United States, Europe, and Japan, many of whom have never heard of the San Blas Kuna of Panama who make the fabric pictures that adorn the clothing, wall hangings, and other goods we buy. In this study, Karin Tice explores the impact of the commercialization of mola production on Kuna society, one of the most important, yet least studied, social changes to occur in San Blas in this century. She argues that far from being a cohesive force, commercialization has resulted in social differentiation between the genders and among Kuna women residing in different parts of the region. She also situates this political economic history within a larger global context of international trade, political intrigue, and ethnic tourism to offer insights concerning commercial craft production that apply far beyond the Kuna case. These findings, based on extensive ethnographic field research, constitute important reading for scholars and students of anthropology, women’s studies, and economics. They also offer an indigenous perspective on the twentieth-century version of Columbus’s landing—the arrival of a cruise ship bearing wealthy, souvenir-seeking tourists.

Peter Gow unites the ethnographic data collected by the fieldwork methods invented by Malinowski with Levi-Strauss's analyses of the relations between myth and time. His book is an analysis of a century of social transformation in an indigenous Amazonian society, the Piro people of PeruvianAmazonia, taking as its starting point a single myth told to the author by a Piro man. Gow explores Piro history and ethnography outwards into the domains of myth-telling in general, and following the logic of certain important myths, further out into important domains of Piro experience such asvisual art, shamanry and girls' initiation ritual. All of these domains, like the myths themselves, have been demonstrably changing over the period since the 1880s. The book then shows how these changes are in fact transformations of transformations, changes in social forms that are intrinsicallyabout change. The logic of these changes are then followed through the historical circumstances of Piro people from the 1880s to the 1980s, to show how the intrinsically transformational nature of Piro social forms led them to respond in the ways that they did to the coming of rubber bosses,missionaries, and film-makers.This book makes an important contribution to debates in anthropology on the nature of history and social change, as well as addressing neglected areas such as myth, visual art, and the methodological issues involved in addressing fieldwork and archival data.
