Materiality in Modernist Short Fiction provides a fresh approach to reading material things in modern fiction, accounting for the interplay of the material and the cultural. This volume investigates how Djuna Barnes, Katherine Mansfield, and Jean Rhys use the short story form to evoke the material world as both living and lived, and how the spaces they create for challenging gendered social norms can also be nonanthropocentric spaces for encounters between the human and the nonhuman. Poplawski 2003, p. 5). In order to find out what is so special about the literary period between 1901 and 1939 extra-literary developments and contexts as well as thematic and formal innovations according to modernism will be considered at first in this paper. Afterwards the modernist short story, as an important 'invention' of modernist writers, and its main characteristics and features are of interest. In this respect some writers of the modernist era, such as Joseph Conrad, James Joyce, Sherwood Anderson etc., and some of their short stories will be considered to get a completed picture of the topic. Katherine Mansfield, one of the great Modernist innovators of twentieth-century English literature, plays a central role in this regard. After a biographical overview her contribution to the 'invention' of the short story with special interest to characteristic features of her way of writing will be presented. Finally, the aim should be to explore how one of Katherine Mansfield's last short stories 'The Fly' can be used for English language teaching. At first a short plot summary and various kinds of interpretations are given to get at the real meaning of the story. Then a concrete example of classroom treatment, including a worksheet, will be dealt with. This worksheet gives attention to text gaps, which can be found within the short story, in the way that they can be seen as 'adjunctive structures' and can be used for text work in groups.

Discussion of Mansfield¿s writing technique in the early years after her death was initially subordinate to the overwhelming interest in her personality, with the hagiography of her lifeand praise for her personal writing - particularly in France - for many years taking precedence over any consideration of her fiction. However, with the passage of time there has emerged a more balanced and critical viewpoint, with an attempt to remove the saint-like, ethereal, wholly false mask of the author so revered by the French. The aim of this discussion is to illustrate how radical and innovative Mansfield¿s narrative writing would become during her life-time, ultimately placing her at the forefront of Modernist short story writers. Yet even today, there are a few critics who tend to concentrate on the facets of Mansfield¿s personality or her art which tally with their particular literary hypothesis, ignoring what does not, in order to create their particular version of Mansfield the writer. It is not often that one is able to view all the facets which go to make up Mansfield¿s complex body of work. Mansfieldwas that rare thing - a writer exclusively associated with the short story. The notional superficiality of her stories, together with the premise that the short story is perceived to be alesser form, has meant that many critics have viewed Mansfield as a minor writer. It is not known what she might have accomplished had her life not been cut short or whetherher narrative art might have gone in a different direction. Her legacy comprises roughly ninety stories - some incomplete - totalling about 300,000 words. This study offers a detailed consideration of Mansfield's short stories and her work in thecontext of a literary Modernist.
