The late Leszek Kolakowski was one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century. A prominent anticommunist writer, Kolakowski was also a deeply humanistic thinker, and his meditations on society, religion, morality, and culture stand alongside his political writings as commentaries on intellectual—and everyday—life in the twentieth century. Kolakowski’s extraordinary empathy, humor, and erudition are on full display in Is God Happy?, the first collection of his work to be published since his death in 2009. Accessible and wide ranging, these essays—many of them translated into English for the first time—testify to the remarkable scope of Kolakowski’s work. From a provocative and deeply felt critique of Marxist ideology to the witty and self-effacing “In Praise of Unpunctuality” to a rigorous analysis of Erasmus’ model of Christianity and the future of religion, these essays distill Kolakowski’s lifelong engagement with the eternal problems of philosophy and some of the most vital questions of our age.

"A work of rare scope and power that grapples with the big questions: Is happiness the proper end of life, as the Greeks conceived it to be, or is life, as it appears since the early English novel, an endless trial?"--Adam Potkay

These essays attempt to confront the effect of years of postmodernity and its promotion of individuality at the cost of solidarity and communal spirit. In the wake of this it suggests possible frameworks for an art study that restores a certain focus on communal spirit. It proposes, too, that art study’s fragile position in contemporary society is a consequence of over-commercialisation and its resultant surface values. Consumerist and corporate ideology encourage the consumer/individual’s self-realisation, seemingly divorced from communal interests. Within this isolation lies the potential breakdown of ethics. Therefore, I dream of a kinder society, i.e. one where we are engaged in realising the community, as its citizens. This is not blind obedience, but in a spirit of contributing to a whole (society). More specifically, it means allowing and, to a degree, maintaining art study, as a sphere of possibilities for budding citizen artists. It is envisaging art study as a discursive arena, and creating an academic space that allows for art’s main contribution - the dislodging of the so-called proper – i.e. entrenched doctrine. I believe that art study can contribute to the improving of society, in the main, because art enacts a different sharing of the sensible.

Wittgenstein said that philosophers should greet each other, not by saying, “Hello,” but rather, “Take your time.” But what is time? Time is money, but this points to an even better answer to this basic question for our modern epoch: time is acceleration. In a cultural system which stresses economic efficiency, the quicker route is always the more prized, if not always the better one. Wittgenstein’s dictum thus constitutes an act of rebellion against the dominant vector of our culture, but as such it threatens to become (quickly) anti-modern. We need an approach to “reading” our information-rich culture which is ...

Leszek Kolakowski’s masterpiece, one of the twentieth century’s most important books—for the first time in a one-volume paperback. Renowned philosopher Leszek Kolakowski was one of the first scholars to reveal both the shortcomings and the dangers posed by communist regimes. He now presents, for the first time in one paperback volume, his definitive Main Currents of Marxism: “A prophetic work,” according to the Library of Congress, that provides “the most lucid and comprehensive history of the origins, structure, and posthumous development of the system of thought that had the greatest impact on the 20th century.”

This book analyzes such symbolic designs of the modern troubled imagination as the conspiracy theory of society, deterministic concepts of identity and order, antisemitic obsessions, self-hatred, and the myth of the loss of roots. It offers, among other things, the unique East-Central European materials incorporated in a broad, imaginative synthesis and critique of contemporary social analysis.
