Seminar paper from the year 2000 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1- (A-), Ruhr-University of Bochum, language: English, abstract: Like many of Philip Larkin`s poems, Mr. Bleaney and Dockery and Son present a rather depressing view of life and its meaning. By means of comparing themselves to other characters, the poems` respective speakers willingly or unwillingly tell us something about their own lives. Both poems deal with such opposing themes as solitude and sociability, choice and fate. The paper at hand will try to present similarities and differences between the two poems. Special emphasis will be put on the reasons for the speakers` identification with Mr. Bleaney and Dockery. Accordingly, the first step will be to give a sketch of the poems` content and communicative situation. After an introduction to the two poems, the way different essential themes are presented in the poems will be compared.

In Philip Larkin’s Poetics István D. Rácz offers a reading of Larkin’s credo that systematically discusses the links between his principles and practice – a discussion notably absent up to now from the many studies of this outstanding post-1945 British poet. While Larkin claimed that his poetry did not need any explication, Rácz argues that a careful reading reveals a coherent poetics. This thoroughgoing discussion of the oeuvre provides ample evidence that Larkin’s poetry of interacting opposites creates a logically organized system based on principles to be found in his poetics.

For the first time, Faber publish a selection from the poetry of Philip Larkin. Drawing on Larkin's four collections and on his uncollected poems. Chosen by Martin Amis. 'Many poets make us smile; how many poets make us laugh - or, in that curious phrase, "laugh out loud" (as if there's another way of doing it)? Who else uses an essentially conversational idiom to achieve such a variety of emotional effects? Who else takes us, and takes us so often, from sunlit levity to mellifluous gloom?... Larkin, often, is more than memorable: he is instantly unforgettable.' - Martin Amis

Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Law - European and International Law, Intellectual Properties, grade: -, , language: English, abstract: Despite sharing historical roots, genocide and persecution are increasingly considered two separate crimes with divergent legal elements that represent two different social wrongdoings. Genocide is a crime aimed at the destruction of groups, characterized by intent to destroy the group, whereas persecution is an offense aimed at serious discrimination against individuals, characterized by the mass or systematic character of the killing. Therefore, this paper will tackle the question of moral difference between genocide and persecution and ask why genocide can still be considered the “crime of crimes” if, contrary to persecution, it does not even require a mass-scale attack or a high number of victims. The most convincing approach argues that genocide risks more ancillary harm due to the additional intent not only to harm current group members, but also to destroy the group itself. Genocide per se is not worse than persecution, but it is more likely to expand into massive devastation. This is the reason why even “small” genocides need to be prosecuted, punished and prevented by international law.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 9.00, Ranchi University , language: English, abstract: This research aims to rework upon certain established and fundamental aspects of Larkin’s poetry, which not only define but also determine his elusive philosophical stance. Larkin appears to have had a close affinity with the distinguished German philosopher, Arthur Schopenhauer, the propounder of great systems of thought. Both Larkin and Schopenhauer seems to have been disillusioned by the frugal rewards of life and endeavoured to explore its subtleties.

Essay from the year 2000 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0 (A), University of Hamburg (FB Anglistics), course: Seminar 1b: The Language of Poetry and Advertising, language: English, abstract: Writing a poem is a highly complex process which at the same time enables and forces the writer to express his ideas in (mostly) only a few words or sentences. It is thus very important to use a dense language which very carefully picks from a potentially broad semantic range. The aim of this selecting process must be not only to transmit isolated meanings of words but also to create an atmosphere which somehow enables the reader to reconstruct the feelings the author had when he1 wrote his poem. In order to do so there are different possibilities: It is possible to make use of the connotations words possess and which add additional meaning to their denotations. Moreover it is also a well used means to embed different rhetoric devises in a text in order to intensify its density and to increase its emotionality. This can be done on the basis of two different levels: Firstly there are rhetoric figures on a syntactic level. Examples of that kind relate to the position of words (inversion, parallelism...), the phenomenon of repetition (anaphors, reduplicatio anadiplosis...) or the quantity of expressions (amplifications, antithesis...). Secondly there are the so- called tropes which represent rhetoric devises on a semantic level. The word “tropes” originates in Greek and designs an “unusual expression”. Tropes do therefore occur when one expression is replaced by another which derives from a different (semantic) context. Examples of the second kind are metaphors, allegories and irony. In the following interpretation of the poem “Hawk Roosting” by Ted Hughes I am going to refer to some of the rhetoric devises which I have just presented. In doing so I am going to prove that this poem is a perfect example of a language which is at the same time emotive and descriptive and therefore combines two most interesting and fascinating aspects of poetry. As I am going to show the author does not use many different stylistic devices but rather concentrates on one single one. Nevertheless, this one is sufficiently enough, well chosen and serves its purpose. 1 For reasons of space I am only going to use masculine forms in this essay.
