Musical floodgates were opened after the Beatles' first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964. Suddenly, the U.S. record charts, radio, and television were overrun with British rock and pop musicians. Although this British Invasion was the first exposure many Americans had to popular music from the United Kingdom, British pop — and more specifically British rock and roll — had been developing since the middle of the 1950s. Author James Perone here chronicles the development of British rock, from the 1950s imitators of Elvis Presley and other American rockabilly artists, to the new blends of rockabilly, R&B, Motown, and electric blues that defined the British Invasion as we recognize it today. May 1964 saw major gang-style battles break out in British resort communities between the Mods and the Rockers. The tensions between the two groups had been developing for several years, with each group claiming their own sense of culture and style. The Mods wore designer clothing, rode Vespa motor scooters, and shared an affinity for black American soul music, while the Rockers favored powerful motorcycles, greased-back hair, and 1950s American rock and roll. It was within this context that the sounds of the British Invasion developed. The contributions of Cliff Richard, Billy Fury, Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, Tommy Steele, the Tornados, Tony Sheridan, Blues Incorporated, and others to the development of British rock and roll are examined, as are the contributions and commercial and artistic impact of major British Invasion artists such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Dave Clark Five, the Yardbirds, Manfred Mann, the Who, the Kinks, and others. After investigating these groups and their influences upon one another, Perone concludes by examining the commercial and stylistic impact British rock musicians had on the American music of the time.

This is the story of Colin: a young man bearing witness to one of the greatest decades Britain ever knew - the 60s. From his last day at school to supporting The Who, this was the time for the Mods to rise and throw off the shackles of previous generations and their grey and dreary music. Post war Britain in the early 60's was slowly recovering from the financial pressures of the second world, and the death knell had sounded as its once mighty Empire slowly sank beneath the waves. Britain had reached its own 'Crossroads', and now with peacetime conscription ending, and no uniforms to wear, and no regulation short back and sides' haircuts to endure, a new civilian army of youths were entering the workplace. Being the most prosperous decade since the second-world war, the working youth of the day now had a disposable income with money to burn. This was a new battleground and the electric guitar became the weapon of choice. From the first battle between Mods and Rockers at Cockett Wick in 1961 to the notorious beachfront confrontations with coppers in Brighton in later years, Colin and his generation were beating the drum for a new style, beat and ethos to take Britain into a brighter and more confident future. His prevailing love of the guitar and rock 'n' roll music had prompted him to form a group with his friends at school, and so he pursued a parallel career over the next 8 years while continuing to work in the bank. In a world consumed with music, his banking career took back seat, but would teach him how to count banknotes at high speed, a useful requisite should the group hit the big time and make it's millions. Follow the tale of a young man's journey into adulthood as he faces jail for being among a group of Mods who took on the Rockers in the first ever major altercation near Clacton in 1961 - with the press coverage read by his non too impressed bank bosses; their pursuit of stardom, the opening of a new scene laced with 'Purple Hearts', and the call of the dingy pubs and clubs a million miles away from the super groups of the 60s like the Stones and the Beatles. Learn of their travels during the very early years of the British rock 'n' roll era, sharing a stage with veteran American rock 'n' roll stars. Eventually becoming the desired support group for many emerging British acts like the Who, Tom Jones, Dave Clark Five, the Merseybeats, and the Love Affair, and numerous other popular groups of the time. An unforgettable highlight moment for the author and his pals was to meet and play on the same stage with one of his childhood heroes, the wild man of rock 'n' roll, Jerry Lee Lewis. Who are pop dandies? Why are stars like David Bowie, Jarvis Cocker, Pete Doherty and Robbie Williams so dandified? Taking up a wide range of British pop stars, Hawkins seeks to find out why so many have cast themselves in roles that often take style to absurd extremes. Why do we derive pleasure from the performing body, and how is entertainment linked to categories of gender and sexuality? The author insists that pop performances can be understood through human characteristics that relate to the particulars of dandyism, camp and glamour, and this he theorizes through the work of Charles Baudelaire. One of the political objectives of the dandy is to liberate himself through a denial of the structures that assume fixed identity. Not least, it is acts of queering in pop music that characterize entire generations of male artists in the UK. Setting out to discover what distinguishes the British pop dandy, Hawkins considers the role of music and performance in the articulation of hyperbolic display. It is argued that the recorded voice is a construction that idealizes self-representation, and absorbs the listener's attention.
