This volume is an outgrowth of the program Modular Representation Theory of Finite and p-Adic Groups held at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences at National University of Singapore during the period of 1-26 April 2013. It contains research works in the areas of modular representation theory of p-adic groups and finite groups and their related algebras. The aim of this volume is to provide a bridge — where interactions are rare between researchers from these two areas — by highlighting the latest developments, suggesting potential new research problems, and promoting new collaborations. It is perhaps one of the few volumes, if not only, which treats such a juxtaposition of diverse topics, emphasizing their common core at the heart of Lie theory.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Fifth Spanish Meeting on Number Theory, held from July 8-12, 2013, at the Universidad de Sevilla, Sevilla, Spain. The articles contained in this book give a panoramic vision of the current research in number theory, both in Spain and abroad. Some of the topics covered in this volume are classical algebraic number theory, arithmetic geometry, and analytic number theory. This book is published in cooperation with Real Sociedad Matemática Española (RSME).

Diagrammatic Algebra written by Chris Bowman and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-02 with Mathematics categories.

Diagrammatic Algebra provides the intuition and tools necessary to address some of the key questions in modern representation theory, chief among them Lusztig’s conjecture. This book offers a largely self-contained introduction to diagrammatic algebra, culminating in an explicit and entirely diagrammatic treatment of Geordie Williamson’s explosive torsion counterexamples in full detail. The book begins with an overview of group theory and representation theory: first encountering Coxeter groups through their actions on puzzles, necklaces, and Platonic solids; then building up to non-semisimple representations of Temperley–Lieb and zig-zag algebras; and finally constructing simple representations of binary Schur algebras using the language of coloured Pascal triangles. Next, Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomials are introduced, with their study motivated by their combinatorial properties. The discussion then turns to diagrammatic Hecke categories and their associated p-Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomials, explored in a hands-on manner with numerous examples. The book concludes by showing that the problem of determining the prime divisors of Fibonacci numbers is a special case of the problem of calculating p-Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomials—using only elementary diagrammatic calculations and some manipulation of (5x5)-matrices. Richly illustrated and assuming only undergraduate-level linear algebra, this is a particularly accessible introduction to cutting-edge topics in representation theory. The elementary-yet-modern presentation will also be of interest to experts.

This book provides an accessible introduction to the state of the art of representation theory of finite groups. Starting from a basic level that is summarized at the start, the book proceeds to cover topics of current research interest, including open problems and conjectures. The central themes of the book are block theory and module theory of group representations, which are comprehensively surveyed with a full bibliography. The individual chapters cover a range of topics within the subject, from blocks with cyclic defect groups to representations of symmetric groups. Assuming only modest background knowledge at the level of a first graduate course in algebra, this guidebook, intended for students taking first steps in the field, will also provide a reference for more experienced researchers. Although no proofs are included, end-of-chapter exercises make it suitable for student seminars.

From April 1, 1984 until March 31, 1991 the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft has sponsored the project "Representation Theory of Finite Groups and Finite Di mensional Algebras". The proposal for this project was submitted by B. Huppert (Mainz), B. Fischer (Bielefeld), G. Michler (Essen), H. Pahlings (Aachen) and C. M. Ringel (Bielefeld) in order to strengthen the interaction between the different re search areas in representation theory. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft has given many research positions and fellowships for young algebraists enabling them to do research at their own uni versities or as visitors at well known research institutions in America, Australia, England and France. The whole project benefitted very much from an extensive exchange programme between German and American scientists sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and by the National Science Foundation of the United States. This volume presents lectures given in a final conference and reports by members of the project. It is divided into two parts. The first part contains seven survey articles describing recent advances in different areas of representation theory. These articles do not only concentrate on the work done by the German research groups, but also inform on major developments of the subject at all. The volume omits those topics already treated in book form. In particular, it does not contain a survey on K.

This paper shows that properties of projective modules over a group ring $\mathbf{Z}_p[\Delta]$, where $\Delta$ is a finite Galois group, can be used to study the behavior of certain invariants which occur naturally in Iwasawa theory for an elliptic curve $E$. Modular representation theory for the group $\Delta$ plays a crucial role in this study. It is necessary to make a certain assumption about the vanishing of a $\mu$-invariant. The author then studies $\lambda$-invariants $\lambda_E(\sigma)$, where $\sigma$ varies over the absolutely irreducible representations of $\Delta$. He shows that there are non-trivial relationships between these invariants under certain hypotheses.
