Abelian varieties and their moduli are a central topic of increasing importance in today`s mathematics. Applications range from algebraic geometry and number theory to mathematical physics. The present collection of 17 refereed articles originates from the third "Texel Conference" held in 1999. Leading experts discuss and study the structure of the moduli spaces of abelian varieties and related spaces, giving an excellent view of the state of the art in this field. The book will appeal to pure mathematicians, especially algebraic geometers and number theorists, but will also be relevant for researchers in mathematical physics.

The present volume, with contributions of R. Dijkgraaf, C. Faber, G. van der Geer, R. Rain, E. Looijenga, and F. Oort, originates from the Dutch Intercity Seminar on Moduli (year 1995-96). Some of the articles here were discussed, in preliminary form, in the seminar; others are completely new. Two introductory papers, on moduli of abelian varieties and on moduli of curves, accompany the articles. Topics include a stratification of a moduli space of abelian varieties in positive characteristic, and the calculation of the classes of the strata, tautological classes for moduli of abelian varieties as well as for moduli of curves, correspondences between moduli spaces of curves, locally symmetric families of curves and jaco bians, and the role of symmetric product spaces in quantum field theory, string theory and matrix theory. This Intercity Seminar is part of the long term project "Algebraic curves and Riemann surfaces: geometry, arithmetic and applications" , sponsored hy the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), that has been running since 1994. Its ancestry can be traced back to joint activities in the seventies (if not earlier), which as of 1980 had evolved into active biweekly research seminars. These have been a focal point of Dutch algebraic geometry and singularity theory since. We are grateful to NWO for its support for the project. C.F. thanks the Max-Planck-Institut fur Mathematik, Bonn, for support during the final stages of the preparation of this volume.

This generalization of geometry is bound to have wide spread repercussions for mathematics as well as physics. The unearthing of it will entail a new golden age in the interaction of mathematics and physics. E. Witten (1986) The idea that the moduli space Mg of curves of fixed genus 9 - that is, the algebraic variety that parametrizes all curves of genus 9 - is an intriguing object in its own right seems to have come slowly. Although the para meters or moduli of curves surface in Riemann's famous memoir on abelian functions (from 1857) and in work of Hurwitz and later were considered by the geometers of the Italian school, for a long time they attracted attention only in the special case 9 = 1, where they were studied in the framework of the theory of modular functions. The work of Grothendieck, who in the early sixties pointed the way towards the right approach, and the subsequent construction (in 1965) of the moduli space Mg by Mumford were the first foundational work, to be followed by the construction of a compactification Mg by Deligne and Mumford in 1969. The theorem of Harris and Mumford saying that for 9 sufficiently large the space Mg is of general type was the first big insight in its structure.

This graduate-level textbook introduces the classical theory of complex tori and abelian varieties, while presenting in parallel more modern aspects of complex algebraic and analytic geometry. Beginning with complex elliptic curves, the book moves on to the higher-dimensional case, giving characterizations from different points of view of those complex tori which are abelian varieties, i.e., those that can be holomorphically embedded in a projective space. This allows, on the one hand, for illuminating the computations of nineteenth-century mathematicians, and on the other, familiarizing readers with more recent theories. Complex tori are ideal in this respect: One can perform hands-on computations without the theory being totally trivial. Standard theorems about abelian varieties are proved, and moduli spaces are discussed.

The topic of this book is the theory of degenerations of abelian varieties and its application to the construction of compactifications of moduli spaces of abelian varieties. These compactifications have applications to diophantine problems and, of course, are also interesting in their own right. Degenerations of abelian varieties are given by maps G - S with S an irre ducible scheme and G a group variety whose generic fibre is an abelian variety. One would like to classify such objects, which, however, is a hopeless task in this generality. But for more specialized families we can obtain more: The most important theorem about degenerations is the stable reduction theorem, which gives some evidence that for questions of compactification it suffices to study semi-abelian families; that is, we may assume that G is smooth and flat over S, with fibres which are connected extensions of abelian varieties by tori. A further assumption will be that the base S is normal, which makes such semi-abelian families extremely well behaved. In these circumstances, we give a rather com plete classification in case S is the spectrum of a complete local ring, and for general S we can still say a good deal. For a complete base S = Spec(R) (R a complete and normal local domain) the main result about degenerations says roughly that G is (in some sense) a quotient of a covering G by a group of periods.

Abelian varieties are special examples of projective varieties. As such theycan be described by a set of homogeneous polynomial equations. The theory ofabelian varieties originated in the beginning of the ninetheenth centrury with the work of Abel and Jacobi. The subject of this book is the theory of abelian varieties over the field of complex numbers, and it covers the main results of the theory, both classic and recent, in modern language. It is intended to give a comprehensive introduction to the field, but also to serve as a reference. The focal topics are the projective embeddings of an abelian variety, their equations and geometric properties. Moreover several moduli spaces of abelian varieties with additional structure are constructed. Some special results onJacobians and Prym varieties allow applications to the theory of algebraic curves. The main tools for the proofs are the theta group of a line bundle, introduced by Mumford, and the characteristics, to be associated to any nondegenerate line bundle. They are a direct generalization of the classical notion of characteristics of theta functions.

This volume collects contributions from speakers at the INdAM Workshop “Birational Geometry and Moduli Spaces”, which was held in Rome on 11–15 June 2018. The workshop was devoted to the interplay between birational geometry and moduli spaces and the contributions of the volume reflect the same idea, focusing on both these areas and their interaction. In particular, the book includes both surveys and original papers on irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds, Severi varieties, degenerations of Calabi-Yau varieties, uniruled threefolds, toric Fano threefolds, mirror symmetry, canonical bundle formula, the Lefschetz principle, birational transformations, and deformations of diagrams of algebras. The intention is to disseminate the knowledge of advanced results and key techniques used to solve open problems. The book is intended for all advanced graduate students and researchers interested in the new research frontiers of birational geometry and moduli spaces.

The preface to a textbook frequently contains the author's justification for offering the public "another book" on the given subject. For our chosen topic, the arithmetic of elliptic curves, there is little need for such an apologia. Considering the vast amount of research currently being done in this area, the paucity of introductory texts is somewhat surprising. Parts of the theory are contained in various books of Lang (especially [La 3] and [La 5]); and there are books of Koblitz ([Kob]) and Robert ([Rob], now out of print) which concentrate mostly on the analytic and modular theory. In addition, survey articles have been written by Cassels ([Ca 7], really a short book) and Tate ([Ta 5J, which is beautifully written, but includes no proofs). Thus the author hopes that this volume will fill a real need, both for the serious student who wishes to learn the basic facts about the arithmetic of elliptic curves; and for the research mathematician who needs a reference source for those same basic facts. Our approach is more algebraic than that taken in, say, [La 3] or [La 5], where many of the basic theorems are derived using complex analytic methods and the Lefschetz principle. For this reason, we have had to rely somewhat more on techniques from algebraic geometry. However, the geom etry of (smooth) curves, which is essentially all that we use, does not require a great deal of machinery.
