Esiste veramente l’anima? Questa è la domanda che due giovani coniugi pongono al dottor Antonio Cardarelli, prudente sostenitore della scienza. Considerato l’Edgar Allan Poe napoletano, Verdinois era noto soprattutto come traduttore del grande scrittore di Baltimora, ma condivideva anche il suo interesse per l’esplorazione dei temi dell’angoscia, della follia, della morte e dell’inconscio. Nella sua raccolta gotico-fantastica Racconti inverisimili di Picche, da cui è tratto il racconto breve “Le due mogli”, Verdinois riprende le stesse tematiche che caratterizzano la narrativa di Poe e di alcuni autori russi influenzati dalla letteratura gotica (come Gogol’), ma con un singolare tocco partenopeo. Ancora oggi lo scrittore napoletano è in grado di suscitare l’interesse dei lettori e di coinvolgerli con le sue intriganti narrazioni del sovrannaturale. Questa edizione del racconto “Le due mogli” di Federigo Verdinois propone una versione riveduta e modernizzata a cura di Armando Calvino, che ha adattato il linguaggio e lo stile dell’autore alle esigenze dei lettori contemporanei. Al termine del testo, si trova la versione originale, per consentire un confronto e un approfondimento della lettura.

Questo è un racconto sulle mogli dei Cesari, l’autore non entra nella complessa problematica storica ma ripercorre la tradizione. I giudizi morali sono gli stessi. La galleria dei buoni e cattivi è la stessa. Ciò che cambia, e non è poco, è l’introduzione di un punto di vista femminile. I libri di storia sono sempre scivolati troppo rapidamente sulle donne. Le figure delle tre mogli di Nerone possono apparire persino un po’ stereotipate, ma sono bellissime e forniscono un affresco straordinario non solo dell’epoca ma della logica stessa del potere. Ottavia è il ritratto dell’innocenza, della povera vittima indifesa, subito condannata al ruolo di capro espiatorio. La sua storia suscita ammirazione, per la bellezza e il fascino giovanile, ma soprattutto commozione per il sacrificio. Poppea è la donna bellissima, dalla sconfinata sete di potere. Il suo obiettivo non è solo quello di raggiungere l’apice imperiale, ma di sottomettere a sé l’imperatore. Le scene sui suoi pianti e sulle sue sceneggiate sono indimenticabili. Sabina Messalina, la terza, è donna di mondo. Non disdegna certo le ambizioni imperiali, ma quando ne viene estromessa si impegna al massimo per diventare avvocato di successo, un vero principe del Foro.
