"In September 2005, a newspaper in Denmark published 12 cartoons depicting Mohammed, the holy Prophet of Islam. Soon after publication, these pictures became part of various events, political projects and diplomatic action. All over the world, the cartoons - or interpretations of them - were connected to discursive struggles that pre-existed their drawing and publication. The cartoon event thus extended well beyond its immediate dramatic phase of spring 2006, both into the past and the future, and became at least a small landmark case of post-9/11 global media history. In this book, a community of international media researchers collects some of the lessons learned and questions provoked and offered by media coverage of the Mohammed cartoons in 16 countries, ranging from Denmark, Egypt and Argentina to Pakistan and Canada. The book looks at the coverage of the cartoons and related incidents through a number of conceptual lenses: political spin, free speech theory, communication rights, the role of visuals and images in global communication, Orientalism and its counter-discourses, media's relations to immigration policy, and issues of integration. Die von der danischen Zeitung Jyllands-Posten im September 2005 veroffentlichten "Mohammed Karikaturen" waren fur manche ein Test der Grenzen der Pressefreiheit, fur andere nur eine bosartige und geschmacklose Provokation. Fur wiederum andere boten sie einen willkommenen Anlass zum gewalttatigen Protest. Der Karikaturenstreit wirft eine Reihe von Fragen auf: Geht es um die Verteidigung der Pressefreiheit oder um blosse Islamophobie? Steht hier westliche Toleranz gegen ostliche Borniertheit oder geht es um gegenseitigen Respekt und Zuruckhaltung? Wurde der ganze Konflikt durch die Medien kunstlich erzeugt und angeheizt? Mussen wir in der globalisierten Medienkultur eine neue Medienethik der interkulturellen Anerkennung entwickeln? Und wie konnen wir erreichen, dass dieser Respekt wechselseitig ist und nicht bloss zur liberalen Toleranz der Intoleranz wird? To some, the infamous "Mohammed Cartoons" that were published in September 2005 by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten tested the limits of the freedom of the press. Others regarded them as a malicious and tasteless provocation. And for yet others, they were a welcome excuse for violent protests. The cartoon debate raises a number of questions: What is paramount here, defense of the freedom of the press or mere Islamophobia? Is Western tolerance pitted against Oriental narrow-mindedness, or is this rather an issue of mutual respect and restraint? Was the whole conflict artificially created and inflamed by the media? Do we need to develop a new media ethics of intercultural recognition in the global media culture? And how can we ensure that this respect is mutual and not just laissezfaire tolerance of intolerance?

Mohammed wurde im Jahr 570 als Halbweise in Mekka geboren. Nach einer Begegnung in der Höhle des Berges Hira mit dem Engel Gabriel, erfuhr er mit 40 Jahren, dass er der Gesandte Gottes ist. In einem Zeitraum von 23 Jahren verkündete er den Menschen die Botschaft Gottes, die im Koran enthalten sind. Er selbst gilt als der lebendige Koran und als Vorbild für die Menschen. Die Muslime lieben ihren Propheten Mohammed. Einige von ihnen reagieren auf die Beleidigungen des Propheten, mit Wut und Gewalt, andere nur mit Wut. Der Prophet Mohammed hatte seinen Gefährten verboten, dass man ihn abbildet. Er hat sie vor der Gefahr gewarnt, dass nach seinem Tode ein Personenkult entstehen könnte und Muslime sein Bild anbeten könnten statt Gott. Das schließt auch Abraham, Moses und Jesus mit ein. Da nur Allah alleine der Bildner (al-Musawwir) ist, hatte man damals zeichnen und malen mit Götzendienst gleichgesetzt. Nach Aussage des Propheten werden die Taten jedoch nach den Absichten beurteilt. Wer heute ein Bild zeichnet, macht dies in der Regel weder einen Götzen zu schaffen noch dieses Bild anzubeten. Die Beleidigung des Propheten ist kein aktuelles Ereignis. Er wurde bereits zu Lebzeiten von seinen Feinden auf schlimme Art angegriffen. Wie aber ist er damit umgegangen? This volume analyses current German domestic and foreign policy debates of international relevance. German–Turkish relations, which have a long history and generally unrecognized depth, have rarely been examined as mutually formative processes. Isolated instances of influence have been examined in detail, but the historical and still ongoing processes of mutual interaction have rarely been seriously considered. The ruling assumption has been that Germany may have an impact on Turkey, but not the other way around. Religion, Identity and Politics examines this mutual interaction, specifically with regard to religious identities and institutions. It opposes the commonly held assumption that Europe is the abode of secularism and enlightenment, while the lands of Islam are the realm of backwardness and fundamentalism. Both historically and contemporarily, Germany has treated religion as a core aspect of communal and civilizational identity and framed its institutions accordingly; the book explores how there has been, and continues to be, a mutual exchange in this regard between Germany and both the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey. The authors show that the definition of identity and regulation of communities have been explicitly based on religion until the early and since the late twentieth century; the period in between– the age of secular nationalism– which has always been treated as the norm, now appears more clearly as an exception. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of sociology, politics, history and religion.
