A dramatic increase in knowledge regarding the molecular biology of brain tumors has been established over the past few years. In particular, recent new avenues regarding the role of microRNAs along with further understanding of the importance of angiogenesis, immunotherapy and explanations for the resistance of the tumors to radiation therapy have been developed. A discussion of certain surgical management issues including improvements in imaging along with issues concerning tumor induced epilepsy is included. It is hopeful that this new information will lead to efficacious treatment strategies for these tumors which remain a challenge. In this book, a review of the latest information on these topics along with a variety of new therapeutic treatment strategies with an emphasis on molecular targeted therapies is provided.

Cannabis written by Ernest Small and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-14 with Science categories.

Cannabis sativa is best known as the source of marijuana, the world’s most widely consumed illicit recreational drug. However, the plant is also extremely useful as a source of stem fiber, edible seed oil, and medicinal compounds, all of which are undergoing extremely promising research, technological applications, and business investment. Indeed, despite its capacity for harm as a recreational drug, cannabis has phenomenal potential for providing new products to benefit society and for generating extensive employment and huge profits. Misguided policies, until recently, have prevented legitimate research on the beneficial properties of cannabis, but there is now an explosion of societal, scientific, and political support to reappraise and remove some of the barriers to usage. Unfortunately, there is also a corresponding dearth of objective analysis. Towards redressing the limitation of information, Cannabis: A Complete Guide is a comprehensive reference summarizing botanical, business, chemical, ecological, genetic, historical, horticultural, legal, and medical considerations that are critical for the wise advancement and management of cannabis in its various forms. This book documents both the risks and benefits of what is indisputably one of the world’s most important species. The conflicting claims for medicinal virtues and toxicological vices are examined, based mainly on the most recent authoritative scientific reviews. The attempt is made consistently to reflect majority scientific opinion, although many aspects of cannabis are controversial. Aside from the relevance to specialists, the general public should find the presentation attractive because of the huge interest today in marijuana. Unfortunately, society has become so specialized and compartmentalized that most people have limited appreciation of the importance of science to their lives, except when a topic like marijuana becomes sensationalized. This review of cannabis can serve as a vehicle for public education in the realm of science and technology. Indeed, towards the goal of disseminating the important information in this book to a wide audience, the presentation is user-friendly, concise, and well-illustrated in the hope that non-specialists will find the topics both informative and entertaining.

This volume gathers papers presented at the Workshop on Computational Diffusion MRI (CDMRI 2019), held under the auspices of the International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI), which took place in Shenzhen, China on October 17, 2019. This book presents the latest advances in the rapidly expanding field of diffusion MRI. It shares new perspectives on the latest research challenges for those currently working in the field, but also offers a valuable starting point for anyone interested in learning about computational techniques in diffusion MRI. The book includes rigorous mathematical derivations, a wealth of rich, full-colour visualisations and extensive clinically relevant results. As such, it will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the fields of computer science, MRI physics and applied mathematics. Readers will find contributions covering a broad range of topics, from the mathematical foundations of the diffusion process and signal generation, to new computational methods and estimation techniques for the in vivo recovery of microstructural and connectivity features, as well as diffusion-relaxometry and frontline applications in research and clinical practice. This edition includes invited works from high-profile researchers with a specific focus on three new and important topics that are gaining momentum within the diffusion MRI community, including diffusion MRI signal acquisition and processing strategies, machine learning for diffusion MRI, and diffusion MRI outside the brain and clinical applications.

Glioblastoma is an aggressive incurable primary tumor of the central nervous system. Median overall survival is in the range of 1.5 years even in selected clinical trials populations. Many features contribute to this therapeutic challenge including high intratumoral and intertumoral heterogeneity, resistance to therapy, migration and invasion, immunosuppression. With the access of novel highthroughput technologies, significant progress has been made to understand molecular and immunological signatures underlying the pathology of glioblastoma. Clinical trial designs have shifted from investigating broad “one-for-all” treatment approaches to precision oncology designs. The collection of contributions in this book aim at providing researchers and clinicians an update on different aspects of glioblastoma, i.e. progress in basic, preclinical and clinical research.

This book examines the links between physical activity (PA), cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), and cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. It presents an overview of the role of PA and CRF in the prevention and management of risk factors associated with cardiometabolic diseases such as hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia, obesity, and atherosclerosis. In addition, it explores how these risks vary with different populations such as the elderly and people of various racial backgrounds. The book also highlights risks associated with exercise and presents a prescription for appropriate and efficacious exercise to minimize risk and maximize health benefits for the heart. Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Prevention and Management of Cardiometabolic Disease is an essential resource for physicians, exercise physiologists, medical students, residents, fellows, nurses, and researchers in cardiology, cardiorespiratory fitness, exercise science, health promotion and disease prevention, public health, and epidemiology.

This book describes the basics, the challenges and the limitations of state of the art brain tumor imaging and examines in detail its impact on diagnosis and treatment monitoring. It opens with an introduction to the clinically relevant physical principles of brain imaging. Since MR methodology plays a crucial role in brain imaging, the fundamental aspects of MR spectroscopy, MR perfusion and diffusion-weighted MR methods are described, focusing on the specific demands of brain tumor imaging. The potential and the limits of new imaging methodology are carefully addressed and compared to conventional MR imaging. In the main part of the book, the most important imaging criteria for the differential diagnosis of solid and necrotic brain tumors are delineated and illustrated in examples. A closing section is devoted to the use of MR methods for the monitoring of brain tumor therapy. The book is intended for radiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists and other scientists in the biomedical field with an interest in neuro-oncology.
