The story begins in Paris... Pedro, a struggling artist from Madrid, stands at the Louvre, studying the Mona Lisa, ignoring the crowds of tourists as the painted woman calls to him. As the museum closes, he finally breaks his trance. He realizes that Da Vinci's masterpiece could be a translation of love; yet there was only desire in Pedro's heart. As a student of the immortals, he spent years studying their code, fascinated with the ancestry. He longs for a chance to become one of them; to experience an everlasting dedication. On a sultry night in Madrid, while he was in a state of artistic despair, one of the mysterious immortals visits him. He makes a pledge to Pedro: he will receive his wish. He will be transformed, but only with loyalty. Pedro abandons his life: no more canvases, no more oils. No more love for his sweetheart, Valentina. As she sleeps, Pedro leaves, without a word or a whisper. He is drawn to the immortals, indulging in his infatuation, longing for the fulfillment of the promise. The yearn for immortality remains as he travels to America in his new life. The immortals - and the witches - both welcome him into their sects, however he remains unfulfilled, sinking into a world of misery; tormented, still longing for his promised gift. As he races towards death, he discovers that the mysterious immortal who had broken the vow has lost his gift and was now dying himself. In a desperate search for a love lost, Pedro examines the consequences of his choices. Until he is faced with one final ultimatum: a destiny laced with the scent of the grave. A.L. Mengel, author of the critically acclaimed novel The Mortician, weaves a story of death, resurrection, loss and loneliness in a novel which examines the principles of judgement which humanity holds dear. A.L. Mengel is the author of The Astral Files series, The Tales of Tartarus series, and The Vega Chronicles series, all of which have released to critical acclaim.

On a dreary 2020 autumn day on the Pacific Coast of Oregon, the twins Chloë and Rob Wilson (age 30) arrive from Europe to bury their father, Dan Wilson. They don't know it, but there is an angel with them at the funeral--the ghost of a baby sister who died long ago when Dan Wilson was a young soldier stationed in West Germany over forty years ago in the 1970s. Claire, the angel, died in this world, but she is living a full and prosperous life in a parallel world where Rob and Chloë don't exist. Rob and Chloë are ghosts there, because of a tragic decision Dan made on a bridge in Paris in 1977. Now Dan will be given a second chance to live his life over again from that moment, which in turn will affect many people across several parallel worlds. This is a complex historical novel, a story of angels and ghosts and much more by European author André A. L'Aube. It is by turns romantic, melancholy, uplifting, and in a few spots very disturbing. Readers are warned that this is not a light read. It is a historical novel complete with angels, ghosts, parallel worlds, an escaped Nazi war criminal and his monstrous crimes, and several beautiful, sincere young men and women seeking the answers today to a family riddle from the Cold War era that turns into much more: a plausible answer to the mysteries of Leonardo da Vinci and the Mona Lisa, world's most famous and expensive work of art. In the end, HEA but a challenging road getting there. Primary settings are: Salem, Oregon; Heidelberg, Germany; and Paris, France. Secondary setting touches upon Renaissance Florence in the age of Leonardo da Vinci, who died in 1519 at a chateau in the Loire Valley, owned by his patron King François 1 of France. Leonardo put finishing touches on the Mona Lisa at Clos Lucé near Château d'Amboise. There is a lot the twins don't know as they return to their own busy and exciting lives in Europe. Rob works in Frankfurt and is seriously dating a Luxembourg woman named Elise. Chloe works in Paris, and is seriously dating a handsome young video producer named Yves. When they sell the house and liquidate Dad's property in Salem (their Mom predeceased him by two years in 2018), they find a journal that Dan kept of his happily married life in Oregon after his separation from the U.S. Army in 1980. Strangely, his jotted and jumbled notes suggest it is Journal III, so where are the earlier two? And what is in them? The family only know that he served two enlistments in West Germany. The first was a wonderful time--he was single, healthy, secure, and able to travel all over Europe on a whim, any day, any week, as much as his Army duties at Heidelberg permitted. The second enlistment became a time from hell, in which he had a terrible marriage with a German girl, their baby died, they divorced, her family (including the war criminal father) hated Dan , and Dan's cold-hearted Army superiors showed no empathy or understanding. In 1980, Dan returned to Oregon a broken man having to start life over practically from scratch. So why is the spirit of his lost child, a grown woman from another dimension, tracking the twins' every move as they search for Journals I (the good one) and II (the nightmare)? Dan's mission in life, which he walked away from on that Bridge of Regret in Paris in 1977, was to marry beautiful young Parisian scholar Claudette Mingo, who was about to unravel one of history's greatest secrets: why Leonardo Da Vinci worked for years, until his death, on what would become the most famous and expensive artwork in history: the Mona Lisa hanging in the Louvre for centuries. And why does the image of Lisa Gherardini have that smile, which has baffled scholars and intrigued viewers for half a millennium now? It all becomes clear as Chloë and Rob decipher their father's mysterious, multi-dimensional life.

Rob and Hannah Wilson (twins, 30) return to Oregon from Europe in 2020 for their father's funeral. Dan Wilson, 70, rests in a green cemetery of twittering birds and sun-dappled shade, beside his second wife (or was she?) Nancy, who died in 2018 after 30 happy years together. Among two dozen mourners stands unnoticed a beautiful, stylish angel named Claire from a parallel reality, wearing designer sunglasses and a Parisian outfit-the ghost of the twins' baby sister Klara, who died as an infant in 1979 as Dan Wilson served as a young soldier in Heidelberg, West Germany.Ghostly Claire looks classy and cool behind designer sunglasses, with a faint glow behind her, and untouched by raindrops. Moving unseen through this story, Claire plants Dan's journals and drops other clues to send Rob and Hannah on a mission: tying together loose ends and dead people in three parallel worlds. Claire's gift to this world will be to reveal the secret of Leonardo's Mona Lisa, the world's most treasured and controversial art work.Hannah works for a Paris insurance firm, and is dating young music producer Yves Cartier. Rob is a doctoral student at Frankfurt's Goethe University, dating Elise Gillen of Luxembourg. Young Dan Wilson made a tragic decision on a famous bridge (Pont des Arts) one day in 1978. He said goodbye to the love of his life (Paris grad student Claudette Vervain), returned to his duty station in Heidelberg, and married a Croatian-German girl named Stana Chetko based on Stana's lies about (not) being pregnant by Dan.Their daughter Klara (Claire) was conceived soon after. In that dark, forbidding mountain village near Heidelberg, Dan Wilson's emotional nightmare included a loveless marriage; baby Klara's death at six months from a heart defect; sociopathic bullying by Stana's father (an escaped Croatian Nazi war criminal); and Dan's unsympathetic, sometimes cruel U.S. Army superiors. In Paris, Claudette's doctoral thesis held stunning revelations on Leonardo da Vinci's art works in the Louvre, from notebooks of Dr. Benjamin Wandrous, a Jewish scholar murdered by the Nazis in occupied 1940s France. Soon after Dan left her, heart-broken Claudette dated a young alcoholic. Claudette died in a car crash, and her wonderful discoveries were lost.Fate, however, works with angels sometimes to fix unbearable situations. On the windy, weepy, rainy 1979 night as Klara died at the German medical center in Heidelberg, a marvel happened in the village miles away as her broken-hearted father slept exhaustedly. He awoke in darkness, sat on the bed, and heard a calm, strong woman's voice in his head. He instantly knew it was his baby daughter, but as a mature woman (somehow, somewhere). Klara (Claire) assured him everything would be fine (though he'd grieve for the rest of his life); she promised that at the moment of his death, he'd be given a wonderful gift. He would return as a young man to that bridge, the Pont des Arts near the Louvre. Instead of leaving, he would hold Claudette tightly, and never let her go. The world would learn the true secret of Leonardo's obsession with the portrait of Lisa Gherardini, a rather ordinary housewife in 1500s Florence. Lisa Gherardini del Giocondo's portrait hangs in the Louvre, insured at a record billion Euros. Touched by tragedy and joys forever codified in her eyes and enigmatic smile, Mona Lisa gazes at us from a lost world with a melancholy but courageous visage, a woman who lived a full, hard life centuries ago. Leonardo's obsession as a Renaissance artist and scientist went far beyond her humanity to a spiritual plane. Had anyone known, he'd have been burned as a heretic or witch in a clueless world. In the famous Shakespeare & Company bookstore on the Left Bank, on her journey, Hannah bumps into her lost sister's ghost for the first time under a sign that reads: "Be not unkind to strangers, lest they turn out to be angels."

In this study Rab Hatfield provides a thorough, no-nonsense analysis of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa or La Gioconda. The book begins with a consideration of the generally known sources and documents and a careful look at the painting as we know it now. There follow discussions of rarely examined laboratory photographs and of a recently discovered annotation by Ser Agostino Vespucci in a book he owned of letters by Cicero, from which we learn that Leonardo left a portrait of "Lisa del Giocondo" unfinished no later than October 1503. The book concludes with a hitherto unknown letter written in 1515 by Filippo Strozzi to Lorenzo de' Medici, Captain General of the Florentine Armies and soon to become Duke of Urbino, describing some supposed advances these two men made to Mon(n)a Lisa. The laboratory photographs and newly discovered sources make it clear that the Mona Lisa has probably been reworked twice, that it in fact depicts Mon(n)a Lisa del Giocondo, and that it would be better if we spoke of it as La Gioconda rather than the Mona Lisa. Contents: Part One: Setting the Stage - I. Vasari and Some Other Well Known Sources and Documents. II. The Mona Lisa As We See It Now. Part Two: The Three Mona Lisas. III. The Changes: The x-ray photographs and the first Mona Lisa. IV. The Annotation of Ser Agostino Vespucci. V. Filippo Strozzi's letter.

The topic of attribution and authentication of art works is a well-known one and is currently the subject of heated debate. To arrive at a univocal scientific truth, however, it is necessary to integrate historical-humanistic and technical-experimental skills with a subjective and objective evaluation. The first part of the volume deals with experimentation relating to three valuable artifacts of different material composition: a painting, a sculpture, a codex. The second part of the research regards the emblematic case of the Mona Lisa and its uniqueness. The question connected to this study is: "Is there a second Mona Lisa?" Is the Isleworth Mona Lisa, also known as the Earlier Mona Lisa, a second version of the Louvre Mona Lisa painted by the Renaissance genius Leonardo da Vinci? In order to provide an answer regarding attribution, a methodological path was applied to the painting on canvas "Mona Lisa with columns" (St. Petersburg), establishing that it was a copy, albeit a well-executed one. Numerous versions and copies of the Mona Lisa were also studied, basing their examination on the in-depth archival-bibliographic research of the many paintings on the same subject. The findings highlighted the distinction between two authentic versions by Leonardo, i.e. the Louvre Mona Lisa and the Isleworth Mona Lisa and two copies, i.e. the Prado and the Reynolds Mona Lisas. The latter two, considered to be the most complete and qualitatively better that many others are, in fact, either copies of previous Mona Lisas or of the two authentic versions. The final considerations are dedicated to the chronological sequence of historical sources, stylistic and aesthetic analyses, artistic techniques and experimental investigations to prove the authentication of the Isleworth Mona Lisa by Leonardo.
