No tax in Europe can compare with tithes in its duration, the extent of its application and the economic burden it imposed. In this study Professor Constable considers the tithes paid to and by monks in the Middle Ages. In particular he examines why, by the twelfth century, most monks received tithes and many of them were freed from payment, in spite of earlier theory and practice by which monks, as distinct from the clergy, were usually forbidden to receive tithes and required to pay them. In the early Middle Ages monastic tithes were a matter not only of economics, but of doctrine, canon law and monastic theory. Their history lies in the borderland between theory and practice and Professor Constable studies them against a background of changes in property relationships, in the theory of tithing and in the nature of the monastic order.

In 1226, Pope Honorius III resolved a conflict between the Duke of Silesia, Henry I the Bearded, & Bishop Lawrence of Wroclaw, the see of that duchy. Henry alleged that the bishop had subjected the inhabitants of his duchy to ¿unowed exactions levied as tithes.¿ Henry alleged a devastating impact of Lawrence¿s demands on settlement in his duchy, on his authority over its inhabitants, & implicitly on the entire social, economic, & political order over which he presided. This is a study of the period in which parish churches & tithe revenues are documented. Identifies those features of local churches & tithing that were routine, innovative, & controversial. Assesses directions of change during the period of documentation. Illustrations.

In early medieval Europe, monasticism constituted a significant force in society because the prayers of the religious on behalf of others featured as powerful currency. The study of this phenomenon is at once full of potential and peril, rightly drawing attention to the wider social involvement of an otherwise exclusive group, but also describing a religious community in terms of its service provision. Previous scholarship has focused on the supply and demand of prayer within the medieval economy of power, patronage, and gift exchange. Intercessory Prayer and the Monastic Ideal in the Time of the Carolingian Reforms is the first volume to explain how this transactional dimension of prayer factored into monastic spirituality. Renie S. Choy uncovers the relationship between the intercessory function of monasteries and the ascetic concern for moral conversion in the minds of prominent religious leaders active between c. 750-820. Through sustained analysis of the devotional thought of Benedict of Aniane and contemporaneous religious reformers during the reigns of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious, Choy examines key topics in the study of Carolingian monasticism: liturgical organization and the intercessory performances of the Mass and the Divine Office, monastic theology, and relationships of prayer within monastic communities and with the world outside. Arguing that monastic leaders showed new interest on the intersection between the interiority of prayer and the functional world of social relationships, this study reveals the ascetic ideal undergirding the provision of intercessory prayer by monasteries.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1887 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter V. from A.D. iooo to 1215. From A.D. 1boo to 1215 is a remarkable period in the history of the English Church and English monasteries. Monasteries were built and richly endowed with lands, churches, and tithes, either in whole or part. All these were conveyed by deeds of gifts to the perpetual use of certain monasteries. The benefactions were given for the special purpose of prayers being perpetually said by the monks in their respective churches for the repose of the souls of the donors and their relatives. In many cases the monasteries received only the tithes, without any churches; but when they received churches, with the cure of souls, then the monastic corporations became the rectors, and, in later times, but not at first, were bound to get the licence of the king and bishop to complete the scheme, so that their corporations may become perpetual incumbents. For many centuries the gifts were conveyed by layowners, without any reference to the king or bishop, for they were considered as private property, which the owner may dispose of to whom he wished. This was afterwards changed, and a licence had to be obtained, as I have previously stated. The Norman monks, after the Conquest, had first introduced the custom of appropriating the tithes, with the churches, to the monastic corporations. It was another piece of monkish trickery and cunningness to get money, and lands, and buildings. When they gained possession of the churches, with their tithes, either by free gifts or by the purchase of advowsons, --for the monks invested largely in such purchases, --they found it very profitable. As religious services had to be performed in the church appropriated to the monastery, the monastic body had either to depute one of their own.

An edition and English translation of the Speculum Stultorum (The Mirror for Fools), a long Latin beast epic written near the end of the twelfth century by a monk of Christ Church, Canterbury. This was one of the most popular works of the Middle Ages, a favourite of Chaucer, Gower, and Henryson, and was copied for over three centuries, with a circulation extending as far as eastern Europe. It is not only a milestone in the history of medieval beast epic, but a rich source of information about contemporary life and events at Canterbury. The work is dedicated to William Longchamp, who was Richard I's chancellor, and the significance of this fact is shown. This is a highly entertaining narrative about a donkey who longs to have a longer tail and journeys to Salerno to buy some (imaginary) medicines which will provide it. When his medicines are destroyed in an accident, he decides to become learned instead, and goes off to study at the university of Paris for seven years, but can still say only 'heehaw'. Interwoven into this simple narrative are other stories and long rhetorical set-pieces which satirise the distorted values of contemporary religious life or the corruption of the papal curia, and describe the qualities of an ideal bishop (which the donkey hopes to become).
