First published in 1988, this reissue reconstructs the reaction of financial markets to war, defeat, and revolution in Europe, from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in June 1914, to the bankruptcy of Germany in July 1931. Dr. Brown demonstrates how the contemporary investor can improve the wisdom of his decisions by gaining an understanding of the financial history of these years. He also demonstrates how the skilled investor might project different political and economic realities and estimate their probability of recurrence. In his reconstruction work, Brendan Brown has undertaken extensive research into the financial press in the various European countries, seeing this as a prime clue to the mood in markets at the time. The findings will interest not just economists and financial specialists, but also readers keen to improve their understanding of the political and social events of the period.

In the world of illicit trading during World War II, cigarettes were used as a form of currency. The "black market" aspect of wars has a large role in the daily lives of civilians and soldiers alike. Despite the ongoing war, they still need to have access to goods and necessities. This topic is significant because it will showcase the "opportunity bubble" that desperation created in the context of war and discusses the potential that black markets might help civilians and governments during the war. Unfortunately, black markets rarely are presented in historical narratives. I am using the case studies of Auschwitz inmates, German displaced persons, and American soldiers as a method to explore how commodities as small as cigarettes can help rebuild a nation's economy, which is precisely what happened in postwar Germany and Italy. These case studies will allow us to see what illicit trading granted individuals, the risks and benefits for those participating and how the government responded.

Europe S Postwar Recovery written by Barry Eichengreen and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-12-07 with Business & Economics categories.

Western Europe's recovery from World War II was nothing short of miraculous. From the chaos of the war and the crisis of 1947, Europe moved directly to the most rapid quarter-century of economic growth in her history. The contributors to this volume seek to identify the sources of this singularly successful recovery. That all European countries shared in the miracle suggests that its roots may lie at the international level. The chapters therefore focus on the role played by international institutions - the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the European Coal and Steel Community, the European Payments Union, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade - and weigh the relative importance of domestic and international factors in Europe's postwar recovery. This book will be of interest to students of modern European history and to economists interested in economic growth, European economic integration, and reform of the Bretton Woods institutions.

The Bretton Woods system ensured a quarter of a century of relative stability on the world's financial markets. The quarter of a century which has followed has brought financial chaos and excessive financial volatility. Exchange Rate Chaos: 25 Years of Financial and Consumer Democracydescribes and compares US and British financial history during this period. It highlights: * similarites in financial developments between the two countries * consumer democracy: Have the wishes of consumers dominated exchange rate policy? * The decline of the small investor and the hegemony of financial institutions * How the floating exchange rates are manipulated to government advantage One of the few financial histories to deal with the postwar period, this book shows how financial developments have shaped contemporary society and politics.

Capitalism In Chaos written by Máté Rigó and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-08-15 with History categories.

Capitalism in Chaos explores an often-overlooked consequence and paradox of the First World War—the prosperity of business elites and bankers in service of the war effort during the destruction of capital and wealth by belligerent armies. This study of business life amid war and massive geopolitical changes follows industrialists and policymakers in Central Europe as the region became crucially important for German and subsequently French plans of economic and geopolitical expansion in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Based on extensive research in sixteen archives, five languages, and four states, Máté Rigó demonstrates that wartime destruction and the birth of "war millionaires" were two sides of the same coin. Despite the recent centenaries of the Great War and the Versailles peace treaties, knowledge of the overall impact of war and border changes on business life remains sporadic, based on scant statistics and misleading national foci. Consequently, most histories remain wedded to the viewpoint of national governments and commercial connections across national borders. Capitalism in Chaos changes the static historical perspective by presenting Europe's East as the economic engine of the continent. Rigó accomplishes this paradigm shift by focusing on both supranational regions—including East-Central and Western Europe—as well as the eastern and western peripheries of Central Europe, Alsace-Lorraine and Transylvania, from the 1870s until the 1920s. As a result, Capitalism in Chaos offers a concrete, lively history of economics during major world crises, with a contemporary consciousness toward inequality and disparity during a time of collapse.

Currency And Coercion written by Jonathan Kirshner and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-08 with Political Science categories.

Jonathan Kirshner here examines how states can and have used international currency relationships and arrangements as instruments of coercive power for the advancement of state security. Kirshner lays the groundwork for the study of what he calls monetary power by providing a taxonomy of the forms that such power can take and of the conditions under which it can have effect. He then establishes the actual existence of monetary power by showing how the taxonomy is supported by the historical record, including cases from nations from all over the globe and throughout the twentieth century. He uncovers how monetary power is affected by different monetary regimes, the sources of its success and failure, and the factors that lead states to turn to its use. Kirshner thus succeeds in developing a generalized framework for the analysis of an important yet neglected form of state power that is likely to be of increasing importance in the post-Cold War era. Although some distinguished scholars have touched on the issue of monetary power, there has been until now no standard text on the subject. Integrating security studies and international political economy, this book is a timely synthesis that will be important to the entire discipline of international relations.
