This book provides a thorough knowledge of the nature of the convergence criteria which states must meet in order to qualify for accession to the future Economic and Monetary Union of Europe and comprehensive coverage of both the economic and political rationale of the criteria within the framework of an international political economy approach. Thus, throughout the course of the analysis, three questions in particular are addressed: first, what is the relationship between the economics and politics of the convergence criteria; second, how do domestic and international factors impact upon their future realisation; and third what, overall, is the role of the state. This book gives valuable insights into the Economic and Monetary Union debate.

Monetary Integration in Western Europe: EMU, EMS and Beyond discusses the origins of the Economic Monetary Union, (the European Monetary System is the forerunner of the EMU), and the integration of the European Community starting from the Treaty of Rome. The Treaty provides most of the elements necessary for a monetary union. The Community attempts to formulate a systematic, coherent approach to monetary integration as contained in the Barre Report. The Barre Report proposes that progress in two areas, coordinating economic policies and instituting a system of mutual financial assistance, is essential. In the Hague Summit, the heads of state want to enlarge and closely integrate the members of the Community. A commission under Luxembourg Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Pierre Werner prepares the plan for the EMU. On March 22, 1971, the Six member states approve the adoption of the EMU in several stages, and formally launch the EMU project. The Six have as goals to promote exchange rate stability within the Community, to coordinate economic polies through consultation procedures, to settle structural differences through Community policies, and to liberalize the movement of goods, services, and the factors of production. Economists, sociologists, professors in economics, and policy makers involved in international economics, particularly with the EU, will find the book valuable.

Monetary Integration In Europe written by Horst Tomann and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-15 with Business & Economics categories.

This book provides a fully revised and up-to-date analysis of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). With four entirely new chapters on responses to the financial crisis and the debate on reform options, Tomann assesses the EMU in comparison with other currency regimes through the adoption of a historical analysis. The book discusses in detail basic issues with currency and comprehensively analyzes monetary policy, highlighting problems of policy coordination. Tomann explores new monetary institutions that have been established in response to the financial crisis, before addressing long-term issues and reviewing reform proposals. By focusing on monetary issues the book offers a better understanding of macroeconomic policies and international policy cooperation, and, by extension, provides a thorough economic assessment of the EMU as an institution as it stands today.

The effort to establish economic, political, arid monetary integration in Europe is one of the great dramas of our time, and the implications of its success or failure are enormous for the rest of the world. In this volume distinguished economists and political scientists address the wide-ranging set of issues confronting the nations of Europe and explore the implications of the European experience for regional integration elsewhere. The distinguished contributors of this volume address an impressively broad range of issues, including the influence of Europe's troubled history since the 1930s, the performance of preferential trade arrangements and their impact on multilateral institutions such as the GATT, the particular impact of monetary integration, and the significance of all these developments for the political future of Europe. The Challenge of European Integration is a key document in the interpretation and understanding of current developments in Europe. It is required reading not just for economists and political scientists but for any student of contemporary Europe and of the emerging system of global trade and finance.
