In virtually all the literary traditions of the world there are works of verbal art that depend for part of their effect on the juxtaposition of prose and verse. This volume takes the first step towards a comparative study of prosimetrum', the mixture of prose and verse, with essays by leading linguists and literary scholars of a selection of prosimetrical traditions. The nature of what constitutes verse or prose is one underlying question addressed. An outline of historical developments emerges, especially for Europe and the Near East, with articles on classical, medieval and nineteenth-century literatures. Oirat-Kalmyk are Western Mongols that since the late 14th century stand in opposition to the Eastern Mongols like Khalka, Tümed, Buryat etc. They dominated for hundreds of years the western Central Asian steppes often in a fighting competition with Khazaks, Nogai and other Turkic nomadic tribes. The Dzungar Khanat of the Oirat was destroyed by Manchu China in 1757, but the death throes for the Oirat and Kalmyk community came in the middle 20th century when the limitless steppes became divided between socialist states with closed or at least fixed borders. Different groups of the Oirat-Kalmyk today live in four different states in a diaspora that threatens their common ethnic identity. In recent years borders that had been closed for decades opened again for mutual contacts and the Oirat again are looking for a common identity across borders, an identity that focuses on a common language, script and religion. The Oirat-Kalmyk are embedded in multi-ethnic social structures in which they have developed a great deal of adaptability to the environment as much as a conception of the own identity. This book presents various topics discussed at the international conference on Oirat and Kalmyk Identity in the 20th and 21st century at the Göttingen State- and University Library. The authors investigate Oirat cultural and linguistic heritage from different perspectives such as youth culture, internet language, dances and songs, as well as history, literature, linguistics and religion. The book contributes to the latest research trends in Mongolian and Central Asian Studies and their related disciplines.

Sie steUen oft die einzigen Dokumente dahinschwinden der mundlicher Dberlieferungen dar; urn ihre Erhaltung soUte man daher uber aus besorgt sein, zumal Tonbandaufnahmen durch zahlreiche Einflusse, nicht zuletzt durch die kosmische Strahlung, permanent gefahrdet sind. Auf der Arbeitstagung fand unter den Teilnehmern ein Erfahrungsaustausch uber die derzeit und in naher Zukunft am besten geeigneten Tontrager zur Archivie rung von Tonbandaufnahmen statt. Die Probleme der Archivierung von mundlichen Dberlieferungen gehen jedoch weit uber die der Archivierung von Tonbandaufnahmen hinaus. Vor aUem in Osteuropa gibt es au6erordentlich umfangreiche Archive schriftlich aufgezeichneter mundlicher Traditionen. So begann beispielsweise die Sam meltatigkeit der Esten auf dies em Gebiet bereits im 17. Jahrhundert. Das Archiv der Estnischen Folklore umfa6te 1981 nicht weniger als 1.134.020 Sei 4 ten und 33.995 Stucke in einer Phonothek. Das Material aus dies en Ar chivsammlungen wurde bislang nur zu einem Bruchteil veroffentlicht und wis senschaftlich bearbeitet. Das Problem der Bewaltigung solcher Stoffmassen, auch mit modernen Methoden der Daten-und Textverarbeitung, beschaftigt zahlreiche Wissenschaftler. 3. Zum Problem der Publikation von mundlichen Dberlieferungen wurde die Frage erortert, welche Auswahl aus dem in der Regel sehr umfangreichen Material nach welchen Kriterien getroffen werden soUte. Aus dem Nachlass des Mongolisten Walther Heissig (1913-2005) werden mehrere unveröffentlichte Texte vorgelegt, die für ein breiteres Publikum berechnet sind: eine von der Deutschen Welle gesendete Reihe mit Volkserzählungen aus verschiedenen Ländern, eine Darstellung der Nachforschungen nach Resten des Mongolischen, der Mogholi-Sprache, in Afghanistan, die Heissig 1969-1971 unternahm, sowie eine Novelle, die der Zweiundzwanzigjährige schrieb. Die aus dem Manuskript mitgeteilten Texte belegen das Geschick des Autors, gemeinverständlich und interessant zu schreiben. Der Band bringt weiterhin ein vorläufiges Findbuch zu einem Teil von Heissigs Nachlass in der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin sowie Briefwechsel mit Gelehrten - drei Mongolisten, einer Tungusologin und einem Tibetologen. Der Herausgeber Hartmut Walravens ist Wissenschaftshistoriker. Zu seinen früheren Publikationen gehören ein Gedenkband für Walther Heissig sowie die Edition des Briefwechsels zwischen Nikolaus Poppe (1897-1991) und Walther Heissig.
