Il volume e il CD-rom presentano la sintesi del monitoraggio idrologico e fisico-chimico dei corsi d'acqua della Provincia di Latina e dei dati e dei risultati dello studio sull'origine e la diffusione dei carichi inquinanti potenzialmente responsabili dei processi di eutrofizzazione delle acque superficiali. Le attività descritte sono state svolte nell'ambito del “Progetto Monitoraggio acque superficiali Interne e Costiere”, con il quale la Provincia di Latina ha pianificato le azioni necessarie per rispondere alle competenze attribuitegli dall'art. 106 della L.R. 14/99 sul monitoraggio dello stato di eutrofizzazione delle acque interne. Nel testo sono descritti l'approccio metodologico utilizzato per il monitoraggio, le campagne di misura e i modelli di stima dei carichi inquinanti. Gli autori svolgono quindi una sintetica analisi comparativa dei dati, sia per fornire al lettore una valutazione di insieme dello stato delle acque superficiali del territorio pontino, rispetto al fenomeno dell'eutrofizzazione, sia per dare suggerimenti, al lettore meno esperto, per la lettura e l'interpretazione dei dati e dei modelli di stima riportati nel CD-rom. La pubblicazione cerca infatti di rispondere agli orientamenti normativi comunitari sulla diffusione dei dati ambientali e territoriali, nella convinzione che la tutela dell'ambiente dipenda in primo luogo dall'informazione e dalla formazione dei cittadini.

La presente pubblicazione raccoglie i risultati degli studi per la caratterizzazione del territorio, preliminare alla realizzazione del monitoraggio quali-quantitativo sistematico delle acque dei fiumi e canali dalla Provincia di Latina. Le attività svolte si inquadrano nell'ambito del "Progetto Monitoraggio acque superficiali Interne e Costiere". Dopo una sintetica descrizione delle metodologie adottate e delle conoscenze omogenee acquisite circa la produzione e la distribuzione dei carichi inquinanti sul territorio, viene presentato l'atlante sistematico dei corsi d'acqua e dei relativi bacinie sottobacini idrografici. Per ciascun corso d'acqua e bacino idrografico di competenza, vengono analizzati gli scarichi puntuali e diffusi, le caratteristiche quali/quantitative del deflusso idrico, i rapporti di scambio con gli acquiferi sotterranei e la ripartizione degli afflussi meteorici. L'atlante dei bacini idrografici, pur tenendo conto della dinamicità e complessità dei fattori che determinano lo stato qualitativo delle acque superficiali, è stato realizzato e viene proposto al pubblico con l'intento di fissare un traguardo raggiunto formalizzandone i risultati, così da rendere chiari anche ai non "addetti ai lavori" gli obiettivi che devono ancora essere conseguiti e le possibili strategie di azione.

La Carta e le informazioni associate hanno raggiunto un grado di dettaglio tale da essere sicuro riferimento per chi, per lavoro, studio o semplice curiosità, vuole occuparsi dei suoli della Provincia di Latina. È per questo motivo che l'Amministrazione ha deciso di divulgare tali informazioni, in un formato di utilizzo pratico, affinchè tale bagaglio scientifico possa trovare ulteriore valorizzazione non soltanto nell'ambito del PTPG ma anche in tutte le altre attività, dalla quotidianità del lavoro professionale dei tecnici, agli studi o ricerche a qualsiasi titolo e dettaglio che potranno essere svolti nel territorio provinciale. La conoscenza è infatti la base per effettuare le scelte più opportune, in qualsiasi ambito esse si esplichino.
