This book compiles a broad range of monitoring and early warning technologies focused on high-resolution in-situ water quality parameters at springs and monitoring wells. The surface collapses often cause severe damage to infrastructures, properties, and loss of lives, whereas contaminated groundwater poses risks to human health and the environment. Collapses are critical in karst systems, sparsing a seventh of Earth’s land surface. Karsts are also very relevant for drinking water, yet karst represents a fourth of global drinking water. Mitigating collapses and contaminated groundwater in karst aquifers can be complicated and costly. These parameters detect hydrodynamics, internal soil erosion, and ground deformation changes as karst collapse and pollution proxies. This book represents the most comprehensive overview of decades of research on karst collapse and groundwater contamination. This book is of interest to researchers and policymakers.

Natural and engineered slopes are widely distributed worldwide, including mountain slopes, highway slopes, mine slopes, reservoir dams, etc. These slopes could become unstable due to natural factors or human activities, causing catastrophic loss of life and infrastructure destruction. Therefore, these slopes require constant monitoring to provide early warning and enable mitigation. Advanced monitoring equipment, information technology, and multidisciplinary interaction theories have created new opportunities and challenges in this discipline. Recently, advanced monitoring devices, information technologies, and multidisciplinary intersection theories have contributed to the monitoring, early warning and mitigation of natural and engineered slopes. However, effective and efficient monitoring, precise early warning, low-cost and low-time-consuming remediation, and reliable risk assessment remain obstacles. This Research Topic aims to present the most recent innovative advancements and state-of-the-art natural and engineered slope monitoring, early warning, mitigation, and risk assessment.

"Geomorphology of Desert Environments" delves into the intricate processes and landforms that shape arid landscapes worldwide. Authored by leading experts, this comprehensive book explores the dynamic interactions between geological forces, climate patterns, and ecological systems in desert regions. We begin with an overview of geomorphology principles, including erosion, deposition, and weathering processes specific to deserts. The role of aeolian processes, such as wind erosion and sand dune formation, is examined, showcasing iconic desert landforms like sand seas and yardangs. Through detailed case studies and field observations, we highlight the diversity of desert landscapes and the unique geomorphic features of different desert regions. From the sandstone buttes of the American Southwest to the salt flats of the Sahara Desert, each chapter explores the geological history, environmental dynamics, and ecological significance of desert landforms. We also delve into human-environment interactions shaping desert landscapes, including the impacts of human activities on erosion rates, soil degradation, and desertification. Sustainable land management practices, water resource management, and conservation efforts in arid regions are examined. Richly illustrated with maps, diagrams, and photographs, this book is an indispensable resource for understanding the complex interplay of geological, climatic, and ecological factors in desert environments.

Site Characterization In Karst And Pseudokarst Terraines written by Richard C. Benson and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-24 with Science categories.

This book provides a practical strategy for obtaining a more complete and accurate geologic site characterization. The strategy and methods to characterize complex geologic settings are readily available. The strategy utilizes readily available technology, basic science and good, old-fashioned common sense resulting in a solid understanding of geologic and even karst or pseudokarst conditions. We provide an introduction to many off-the-shelf methods available for site characterization as well as examples of their application throughout the book. The purpose of a geologic site characterization is to understand the 3-dimensional geologic framework, along with the engineering and hydrologic properties of a site including any man-made impacts. A well-done site characterization is the cornerstone of all geotechnical, groundwater and environmental projects. The geologic conditions, particularly karst conditions, can significantly impact a site including its structural stability, groundwater pathways and potential for rapid transport or traps for contaminants. Once we have adequately characterized the geologic conditions can we carry our remediation, design and construction, model flow, and make risk assessments that are accurate and reliable.

With the soaring growth of global population and socioeconomy, energy consumption and demand has been rapidly rising, and coal would still remain a fundamental energy source for a long time into the future. Seeking deep coal resources becomes an inevitable trend due to the depletion of shallow coal resources. Deep mining of coal resources promotes socioeconomic development, whereas bringing a variety of security challenges. In deep underground, there is a significant risk increase in coal and rock dynamic disasters (CRDDs), owing to the changes in physical and mechanical properties of coal and rock. In this regard, it is of great importance and necessity to prevent and control CRDDs effectively and efficiently. As typical natural geological materials, coal and rock have evident inhomogeneity and anisotropy, and manifest differences in strength, deformation, permeability, and other mechanical characteristics due to their various mineral compositions, porosity, and weak structural plane. Considering the complexity of coal and rock, it is essential to carry out laboratory experiments on macroscopic mechanical responses and microscopic fracture characteristics to identify precursor information and reveal evolution mechanisms of dynamic disasters. Yet by far less is known about the combined physical and numerical simulation on multi-scale CRDDs, which hinders the development of corresponding prevention and control technologies. This Research Topic aims to initiate a global scientific and technological discussion on the cutting-edge advances of physical and numerical simulation in monitoring, early warning, and prevention of CRDDs. We welcome Original Research and Review articles addressing the following themes that include, but are not limited to: • Physical and numerical simulation on mechanisms of CRDDs • Numerical simulation on prediction of CRDDs • Numerical simulation on prevention and control of CRDDs collapse

This book presents a systemic view of the diversity of pressures and impacts produced by climate change and human actions. Erosion of biodiversity by changing ocean chemistry, the intensification of global change raises the problem of the adaptation of living resources. Land uses induce ecological imbalances leading to asphyxiation true coastal ecosystems. More than a billion tons of solid waste must be assimilated by the marine environment and food webs. Radioactive discharges emitted into the atmosphere or into the aquatic environment, raise the question of their future. Sea and Ocean series offers a transversal approach of the ocean system that leads to governance, sustainable resource management and adaptation of societies.

This book covers advances in the field of karst from a variety of perspectives to facilitate knowledge and promotes interaction between disciplines. New methods are addressed that advance data collection, analysis, and interpretation in a wide range of karst contexts. Case studies are presented to provide examples of advancing science. Issues addressed include karst hydrogeology (water resources assessment, groundwater pollution and protection), methods to study karst aquifers (based on hydrodynamic, hydrochemistry, isotopes, dye tracing, geophysical surveys, and modelling techniques), karst geomorphology and landscape, mining and engineering in karst media (tunnels, dams, etc.), and karst cavities (touristic caves, natural heritage). This book is a resource for scientists around the world to compare problems, results and solutions. Likewise, the examples included can be used in policy decision making in karst regions. Finally, the contributions can be used as a tool for university teaching.
