Monitress Merle By Angela Brazil Excerpt ws for the sardines! I was thinking some of us would have to ride on the footboard or the luggage-carrier. Is Babbie fair, with bobbed hair? Then I've seen her in church. Seven of us from Chagmouth! We ought to make quite a clique in the school!" "Oh, we don't want any cliques," said Merle quickly. "We had enough of that sort of thing when Opal was there. Miss Pollard told mother that the new mistress, Miss Mitchell, is going to reorganise everything, and bring it up to date, so I expect we shall find a great many changes when we start again. Have you been at school before?" "Romola and I went to The Gables at Porthkeverne," replied Beata. "We loved it, and we were dreadfully sorry to leave. Fay, of course, has been at school in America." We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. “Monitress Merle” is a charming and highly-entertaining story revolving around the coming-of-age of Mavis and Merle Ramsay, two sisters who both attend a traditional English boarding school called 'The Moorings.' Written by the master of schoolgirls' fiction, this a book that will appeal to young girls and those with an interest in traditional English schooling. Angela Brazil (1868 – 1947) was an English author most famous for being one of the first writers of "modern schoolgirls' stories". Her stories were presented from the characters' point of view and were written primarily as entertainment rather than moral instruction. During the first half of the 20th century, Brazil published nearly 50 such books, with the vast majority being set in English boarding schools. Brazil's work had a significant influence on changing the nature of fiction for girls. Her charters were chiefly young females, active, independent, and aware. Brazil's books were often considered to be immoral and deviant, leading to their being burned or banned by many Headteachers in girls schools across Britain. Other notable works by this author include: “The School in the Forest” (1944), “Three Terms at Uplands” (1945), “The School on the Loch” (1946). Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

Angela Brazil (1868-1947) was the first of the British writers of "modern" School Girls' Stories genre - written from the characters' point of view. Along with her sister Amy, Angela then studied at Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. She was quite late in taking up writing, developing a strong interest in Welsh mythology, and at first wrote a few magazine articles on mythology and nature. It was possibly thanks to her sister Amy that she finally began work on a novel at the age of 35. Exceptionally with respect to many of her contemporaries writing in this vein, Brazil did not write any books in a series - each stood on its own with different characters every time. These were considered to deal accurately and sympathetically with the highs and lows in the lives of middle-class schoolgirls, including the tangle of emotional friendships. Her works include: The New Girl at St. Chad's (1911), For the Sake of the School (1915), The Luckiest Girl in the School (1916) and The Jolliest School of All (1922).

“There’s no doubt about it, we really must economize somehow!” sighed Mrs. Woodward helplessly, with her housekeeping book in one hand, and her bank pass-book in the other, and an array of bills spread out on the table in front of her. “Children, do you hear what I say? The war will make a great difference to our income, and we can’t—simply can’t—go on living in exactly the old way. The sooner we all realize it the better. I wish I knew where to begin.”

A collection of all-time favourite school stories Meet the world’s naughtiest boys and girls, the best and the worst students and some really famous children in this book as they make their way through school. Read about David Copperfield and his friendship with Steerforth, Tom Brown trying to find his feet in Rugby school, and Jane Eyre fighting poverty and disease in a school for orphans. Not to forget those other irrepressible and immortal boys, Richmal Crompton’s William Brown, Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer, RK Nararyan’s Swami and Ruskin Bond’s Rusty. Also included are stories from such classics as Anne of Avonlea, Little Men, Stalky and Co., and To Sir, With Love. By turns hilarious and heartwarming, these classic tales are about growing up and the time spent in that one place which is so beloved to some and so hated by others—school.
