Monoamine Oxidases and Their Selective Inhibition, Volume IV, documents the proceedings of the 3rd Congress of the Hungarian Pharmacological Society held in Budapest, 1979. The discovery of the selective monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, such as clorgyline and deprenyl, has given a new impetus to MAO research as well as to the clinical applicability of these compounds. This volume contains 21 papers by researchers and clinicians from eight different countries. It begins with papers on the pharmacological effects and the biochemical mode of actions of deprenyl as well as some other new selective inhibitors. This is followed by communications concerning the biochemical methods applied in the study of the nature of MAO in the mitochondrial membrane. Finally, the neurologists provide an account of their experience with the clinical application of deprenyl, and other inhibitors in Parkinsonian patients. They also discuss the essential role of the dopaminergic mechanism with respect to the disease.

Monoamine oxidase (MAO), a mitochondrial enzyme which metabolizes monoamines in both the central nervous system and peripheral tissues, plays an important role in the regulation of neuronal activities by controlling the concentrations of monoamines. During the past three decades the enzymological properties of MAO have been studied extensively. The most exciting and important advances in these studies have been the determination of the nucleotide sequence coding two forms of human MAO (MAO-A and MAO-B), and the involvement of MAO in potent dopaminergic neurotoxicity of MPTP, which had led to the acceleration of aetiological studies of Parkinson's disease. Other aspects of MAO studies have been the application of selective and safe MAO inhibitors in the treatment of depression and Parkinson's disease as well as the correlation between MAO and several psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders.

Monoamine oxidase (MAO) is linked to psychiatric and neurological disorders, because inhibitors of the enzyme are used clinically for treatment of affective disorders and Parkinson’s disease.
