Heutzutage bevölkern Monster aller Art viele Szenerien in Literatur, Film, Kunst und Werbung. Das Spektrum reicht von Aliens über Krümelmonster bis zu Zombies. Das war im Mittelalter nicht anders. Auch dort begegnet man den Monstern allenthalben – etwa an Kirchenportalen, auf Kapitellen, in Gemälden und Buchillustrationen oder in Romanen, Reisebeschreibungen und naturkundlichen Werken. Allerdings hat sich unsere Vorstellung von den Monstern deutlich gewandelt. Nach mittelalterlicher Sicht werden Wesen mit körperlichen Deformationen wie Kopflose, Zyklopen oder Hundsköpfige, mit eigentümlichen Gebräuchen und Essgewohnheiten wie Schlangenfresser und Elternmäster sowie menschlich-tierische Mischwesen wie Sirenen, Kentauren, Meerritter und Meermönche als monströs angesehen. Tierische Monster gibt es nur unter den Meereslebewesen. So zählt man weder Drachen noch Einhörner, weder Greife noch Trolle zu den Monstern. Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2017 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Ältere Deutsche Literatur, Mediävistik, Note: 2,0, Freie Universität Berlin (Deutsche Philologie), Veranstaltung: Aufbaumodul Ältere Deutsche Literatur, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Arbeit soll versuchen, einige Möglichkeiten der Darstellung von Monstrosität im Mittelalter aufzuzeigen und gegebenenfalls eine Definition zur Klärung der Unschärfe des Begriffes der "Monstrosität" beitragen. Denkt man an das Mittelalter zurück, so kommen einem schnell die Begriffe Monster oder Fabelwesen in den Sinn. Allerdings waren diese Wesen damals nicht nur reine Fiktion, sondern Teil der realen Welt der Menschen. In seinem Buch "Monster im Mittelalter. Die phantastische Welt der Wundervölker und Fabelwesen" beschreibt Simek die auch heutige Faszination der Monster bei der breiten Bevölkerung. So ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass die Filmindustrie gerade in diesem Genre erfolgreicher denn je agiert. Seit dem Altertum bis heute gibt es eine große Auswahlmöglichkeit zur Definition dieser Geschöpfe. Viele Autoren haben sich mit dieser Gattung beschäftigt, leider tragen sie bisher nicht zur endgültigen Klärung der Begrifflichkeiten bei. Als Beispiel wurde die Melusine von Thüring von Ringoltingen ausgewählt. Es soll außerdem untersucht werden, inwiefern ein Kontakt zwischen Menschen und andersartigen Wesen zustande kommen konnte und wie damit umgegangen wurde, ob es zwangsläufig zu einem Konflikt kommen musste. Ferner soll nachgeprüft werden ob Monster, die oft mit dem Bösen gleichgesetzt werden, auch immer als Bedrohung wahrgenommen und gesellschaftlich ausgegrenzt wurden. Auch ohne Drachen oder Riesen in diesem Werk bietet die Melusine einen guten Einblick über die Abbildung von Monstrosität im Mittelalter. Die unterschiedlichen Auffassungen von Andersartigkeit werden hier geschickt durch den Wandel der schönen Melusine in einen schändlichen Wurm, einer bösen Schlange dargestellt. Vor der Analyse der signifikanten Textstellen soll eine kurze Einführung in die Monstrosität im Mittelalter einen Überblick für die Verständlichkeit des Themas geben. Darauf folgt ein Exkurs in die Entstehung der Melusinensage, um in Thürings Roman einzuweisen. Danach beginnt der Hauptteil der Arbeit, mit der Analyse des Textes anhand relevanter Textpassagen. Diese sollen das Konzept der Monsterdarstellung verdeutlichen und die Vielfalt der Abbildungen sowie den Umgang mit dem Fremden aufzeigen. Zum Schluss folgt das Fazit, indem eine Schlussbetrachtung klären soll, ob sich die Melusine von Thüring als Beispiel zur Darstellung von Monstrosität eignet und ob es möglich ist ein genaueres Bild zur Definition dieser Wesen beizutragen.

Dragons, giants, and the monsters of learned discourse are rarely encountered in the Sagas of Icelanders, and therefore, the general teratological focus on physical monstrosity yields only limited results when applied to them. This, however, does not equal an absence of monstrosity – it only means that monstrosity is conceived of differently. This book shifts the view of monstrosity from the physical to the social, accounting for the unique social circumstances presented in the Íslendingasögur and demonstrating how closely interwoven the social and the monstrous are in this genre. Employing literary and cultural theory as well as anthropological and historical approaches, it reads the monsters of the Íslendingasögur in their literary and socio-cultural context, demonstrating that they are not distractions from feud and conflict, but that they are in fact an intrinsic part of the genre’s re-imagining of the past for the needs of the present.
