[Abstract] This thesis is a heuristic investigation of personal experience and utilization of metaphors. A qualitative analysis of experiencing metaphors is presented. This investigation revealed the use of metaphors in personal transformation, overcoming personal adversity and/or suppression, development of self-trust and self-acceptance, and spiritual awareness. The metaphors were stories that were personally held, and not used in formal therapeutic settings. This thesis is an examination of how individuals incorporate metaphors into their lives. Current literature explicated the use of metaphors in therapy. There were implied suggestions about personal metaphors and the incorporation of those metaphors. This study is a direct explication of personal metaphors. This thesis is presented as a continued development of the incorporation of metaphors in individual experience. Heuristic methodology for obtaining data was employed in this study. Data was obtained through open-ended interviews. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and allowed to incubate. Themes were pulled from the transcription and explicated with the use of direct quotes and verbatim metaphors. Eight adults participated as co-researchers, providing interview data, clarification, and approval of the findings. Four themes emerged from the data. The themes described a understanding of the world and personal experience through the use of metaphor. The co-researchers described using a metaphor to intuitively guide their lives. Implications and applications are discussed with regard to personal and therapeutic development.

What's in a name? Using the example of a famous monster from Greek myth, this book challenges the dominant view that a mythical symbol denotes a single, clear-cut 'figure' and proposes instead to define the name 'Scylla' as a combination of three concepts - sea, dog and woman - whose articulation changes over time. While archaic and classical Greek versions usually emphasize the metaphorical coherence of Scylla's components, the name is increasingly treated as a well-defined but also paradoxical construct from the late fourth century BCE onward. Proceeding through detailed analyses of Greek and Roman texts and images, Professor Hopman shows how the same name can variously express anxieties about the sea, dogs, aggressive women and shy maidens, thus offering an empirical response to the semiotic puzzle raised by non-referential proper names.

From the chilling threats of the "ISIS vampire" to the view of al-Qaeda as the "Frankenstein the CIA created," terrorism seems to be inextricably bound with monstrosity. But why do the media and government officials often portray terrorists as monsters? And perhaps more puzzling, why do terrorists sometimes want to be perceived as such? This book, the first of its kind, examines the use of archetypal metaphors of monstrosity in relation to terrorism, from the gorgons of Robespierre's "reign of terror" to the dragons and lycanthropes of anarchism, the beasts and blood-licking demons of ethnonational terrorism, and the hydras and Frankenstein's monsters of Islamic jihadism. Marco Pinfari argues that politicians frame terrorists as unmanageable monsters not only in an effort at cultural "othering" and dehumanization, but also to secure popular backing for rule-breaking behavior in counter-terrorism. The book also explores the way that terrorists themselves impersonate monsters, showing that several groups have pursued such a tactic throughout the history of terrorism. It contributes to a number of ongoing public debates by highlighting how, even when actors like the Islamic State present themselves as mad and irrational, their tactics remain in essence rational. Pinfari also provides an original historical outlook on the roots of monster metaphors and discusses several types of terrorism, including state terrorism, left-wing terrorism, anarchism, ethnonationalist terrorism, and white supremacist groups. In unpacking the functions played by monster metaphors and by their impersonation, Terrorists as Monsters helps the reader understand the political processes that hide behind the fangs.
