Jones uncovers the origins of horror in the suffering inflicted by political and sexual revolution. The avenging monster, a mainstay of horror, emerged from the sexual dissolution of the French Revolution (Frankenstein) and thrived in the syphilitic underworld of Victorian England (Dracula). From Nosferatu and Psycho to Alien and Interview with the Vampire, the twentieth century has spawned new monsters of unprecedented horror. -- What is the connection between sex and horror? -- Why are vampires and nameless or faceless monsters so common in horror? -- Why do we need horror -- yet fail to understand it?

47 years ago, the planet, Altair IV was vaporized by a thermo-nuclear reaction...and a dead zone of 671 million miles was permanently declared. Yet, as of May 4, 2343, radio telescopes at Maui sent a planet-wide message: ALTAIR IV JUST REAPPEARED. An unprecedented three Olympus-class battle cruisers were dispatched for the 16.7 light year trip, in stealth-mode for the entire voyage. The three battle cruisers have the combined capacity of destroying an entire solar system in a day, and yet, were grossly under-gunned for the mission. Two races have coexisted on Altair IV for over a million years, both originating beneath Altair's oceans. The Krell, crablike creatures evolved to highest levels of technology. The Obons, remained in the oceans, perfecting their minds. Neither race has any interest in humanity, though all three races share a common but unknown enemy, the monsters of the Id. Humans, robos, synthetics and androids work together, but..............

Islands Infernos And Monsters From The Id How Lost Retold And Preserved The Works Of Dante And Shakespeare And Why Its Sixth Season Was A Success written by M. K. Sherwood and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-09-23 with categories.

Originally prepared as an Honors Senior Thesis, 'Islands, Infernos, and Monsters from the Id' explores LOST, one of the most popular television series of all time, as a retelling of the essentials of Western literature. Specifically, the book examines the influences of Dante's Divine Comedy, Shakespeare's Tempest, and the classic sci-fi film Forbidden Planet on Lost, closely analyzing the similarities among all these works. In light of the show's controversial sixth season, moreover, this work also argues that Lost ultimately succeeded in fulfilling its Dantean premises by including the Sideways universe, and that far from betraying its audience, the series instead performed the same creative act that Dante himself did: creating its own unique depiction of the afterlife. Through close readings of each of these works, this thesis demonstrates the producers' and writers' deliberate intentions to reintroduce the most essential themes and ideas in Western literature into the popular consciousness.

Next are the many radiation induced mutants and invaders from outer space of the 1950s, followed by offerings from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Hammer Films are included as well as the Mummy movies and Universal's Gillman series. The Disaster Film As Social Practice written by Joseph Zornado and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-07-26 with Social Science categories.

Surveying disaster films from a Lacanian psychoanalytic perspective, this book explores the disaster film genre from its initial appearance in 1933 (The Grapes of Wrath, 1933) to its present-day form (Don’t Look Up!, 2021), laying bare the ideological unconscious at work within the genre. The Disaster Film as Social Practice examines environmental science, history, film and literature in its interdisciplinary analysis of the disaster film genre. It explores the interplay, and the dichotomy, of “restorative” and “reflective” disaster narratives. An analysis of cinema's role in symbolizing and managing collective anxiety around disaster and death narratives examines how disaster films, through their narrative structures and symbolic elements, contribute to the public's understanding and emotional processing of real-world threats, and how cinematic narratives shape and are shaped by public and private ideological discourses, reflecting deeper psychological and environmental truths. Finally, the book offers an overview of how the transformation of the disaster film genre over time tells a history through imagining the worst. Providing a nuanced understanding of the disaster film genre and its significance in contemporary culture and thought, this book will be of interest to scholars and students of film studies, cultural studies, media studies, and environmental studies.
