In this world so much like our own, monsters are not merely legends told around the campfire; they are living, breathing citizens among the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In this world, sometimes the lines of what a true monster is get blurred. Within these files are their stories: the monsters, everyday people, and most of all, the true monsters hiding behind human faces. File #001: Zelin Michaels is a special breed of monster where all five of his senses are heightened; he is what some would call a suprasthete. A very sarcastic, cocky, and intelligent individual, he turned to a life of petty crime using his abilities to help him rob businesses and banks undetected. He slips up, however, and is given a choice: use his abilities to help the police or do the jail time for his long list of offenses.

This book provides a comprehensive examination of the human face, providing fascinating information from biological, cultural, and social perspectives. Our faces identify who we are—not only what we look like and what ethnicities we belong to, but they can also identify what religions we practice and what personal ideologies we have. This one-of-a-kind A–Z reference explores the ways we change, beautify, and adorn our faces to create our personalities and identities. In addition to covering the basics such as the anatomical structure and function of parts of the human face, the entries examine how the face is viewed around the world, allowing students to easily draw connections and differences between various cultures around the world. Readers will learn about a wide variety of topics, including identity in different cultures; religious beliefs; folklore; extreme beautification; the "evil eye;" scarification; facial piercing and facial tattooing masks; social views about beauty including cosmetic surgery and makeup; how gender, class and sexuality play a role in our understanding of the face; and skin, eye, mouth, nose, and ear diseases and disorders. This encyclopedia is ideal for high school and undergraduate students studying anthropology, anatomy, gender, religion, and world cultures.

Monstrosity written by Alexa Wright and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-30 with Art categories.

From the 'Monster of Ravenna' to the 'Elephant Man', Myra Hindley and Ted Bundy, the visualisation of 'real', human monsters has always played a part in how society sees itself. But what is the function of a monster? Why do we need to embody and represent what is monstrous? This book investigates the appearance of the human monster in Western culture, both historically and in our contemporary society. It argues that images of real (rather than fictional) human monsters help us both to identify and to interrogate what constitutes normality; we construct what is acceptable in humanity by depicting what is not quite acceptable. By exploring theories and examples of abnormality, freakishness, madness, otherness and identification, Alexa Wright demonstrates how monstrosity and the monster are social and cultural constructs. However, it soon becomes clear that the social function of the monster – however altered a form it takes – remains constant; it is societal self-defence allowing us to keep perceived monstrosity at a distance. Through engaging with the work of Michel Foucault, Julia Kristeva and Canguilhem (to name but a few) Wright scrutinises and critiques the history of a mode of thinking. She reassesses and explodes conventional concepts of identity, obscuring the boundaries between what is 'normal' and what is not.

In this world so much like our own, monsters are not merely legends told around the campfire: vampires lurk in the night, werewolves run under the full moon, shapeshifters hide behind borrowed veneers, and magicians weave fantastic spells - for a price. They are living breathing citizens among the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In this world, sometimes the lines of what a true monster is get blurred; sometimes the true monsters are just everyday folk. A man plagued by his hatred manifesting as a murderous alter ego. A werewolf who just wants to live a life free from the fear that he may hurt someone. A vampire who has lived to see over half a millennium and lost his purpose. A reanimated corpse - an anomaly even in this diverse world - and the insane genius who created him. These are their stories: the monsters, everyday people, and most of all, the true monsters hiding behind human faces.

This is a series of photographs of large and small pieces of driftwood washed up on beaches in the South of France. At first glance, a pile or a piece of driftwood is just that - a pile or a piece of driftwood. But look more closely, and shapes and patterns and forms and subjects can be found in the individual pieces of driftwood. I looked more closely and could make out faces and forms in the wood - sometimes animal ones (a horse, a duck, a platypus, etc), othertimes I could discover almost human faces. These are my Sea Monsters.
