The essays demonstrate how profoundly eighteenth-century formulations of gender, race, class, and sexuality have, through their challenges to a less empirical, rational, and universalizing past, set the terms for debates in the centuries that followed. They explore a wide range of texts, from Georgic poetry to crime stories, from illness narratives to travel journals, from theatrical performances to medical discourse, and from political treatises to the novel."--BOOK JACKET.

What woeful maternal fancy produced such a monster? This was once the question asked when a deformed infant was born. From classical antiquity through to the Enlightenment, the monstrous child bore witness to the fearsome power of the mother's imagination. What such a notion meant and how it reappeared, transformed, in the Romantic period are the questions explored in this book, a study of theories linking imagination, art and monstrous progeny.

Science fiction and fantasy movies of the 20th century feature many iconic figures and monsters, and the ability to create and own many of them in the form of models provides fans with an opportunity to mingle amongst the greats and not so greats. This book is a collection of figures and dioramas of monsters from both science fiction and fantasy films. Models are presented in chronological order, decade by decade, starting with films in the silent era and running through the end of the century. The building and painting of the figures and dioramas of various scenes from these films, some more accurately than others, provides an opportunity to preserve key moments in these movies.

Dream Interpretation Ancient And Modern written by C. G. Jung and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-06 with Psychology categories.

Jung's landmark seminar sessions on dream interpretation and its history From 1936 to 1941, C. G. Jung gave a four-part seminar series in Zurich on children's dreams and the historical literature on dream interpretation. This book completes the two-part publication of this landmark seminar, presenting the sessions devoted to dream interpretation and its history. Here we witness Jung as both clinician and teacher: impatient and sometimes authoritarian but also witty, wise, and intellectually daring, a man who, though brilliant, could be vulnerable, uncertain, and humbled by life's mysteries. These sessions open a window on Jungian dream interpretation in practice, as Jung examines a long dream series from the Renaissance physician Girolamo Cardano. They also provide the best example of group supervision by Jung the educator. Presented here in an inspired English translation commissioned by the Philemon Foundation, these sessions reveal Jung as an impassioned teacher in dialogue with his students as he developed and refined the discipline of analytical psychology. An invaluable document of perhaps the most important psychologist of the twentieth century at work, this splendid book is the fullest representation of Jung’s interpretations of dream literatures, filling a critical gap in his collected works.

Writing And Filming The Painting written by Laura M. Sager Eidt and has been published by Rodopi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Art categories.

This innovative interdisciplinary study compares the uses of painting in literary texts and films. In developing a framework of four types of ekphrasis, the author argues for the expansion of the concept of ekphrasis by demonstrating its applicability as interpretive tool to films about the visual arts and artists. Analyzing selected works of art by Goya, Rembrandt, and Vermeer and their ekphrastic treatment in various texts and films, this book examines how the medium of ekphrasis affects the representation of the visual arts in order to show what the differences imply about issues such as gender roles and the function of art for the construction of a personal or social identity. Because of its highly cross-disciplinary nature, this book is of interest not only to scholars of literature and aesthetics, but also for scholars of film studies. By providing an innovative approach to discussing non-documentary films about artists, the author shows that ekphrasis is a useful tool for exploring both aesthetic concerns and ideological issues in film. This study also addresses art historians as it deals with the reception of major artists in European literature and film throughout the 20th century.

On The Supreme Good written by Boethius (of Dacia) and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987 with Cosmology, Medieval categories.

In the first work Boethius offers a purely philosophical discussion of man's highest good and, in the course of doing this, presents the life of the philosopher as the highest kind of life. In the second treatise, he considers in detail an issue which was much contested by Christian thinkers of his day: Can philosophical reasoning prove that the world began to be? Or does it rather show that the world is eternal, i.e. that it did not begin to be? In the third he offers a highly naturalistic explanation of dreams. Only within carefully defined limits will he acknowledge that dreams can give us any kind of knowledge of future events.
