È il simbolo dell'alpinismo, che inizia ufficialmente nel 1786 con la prima ascensione ai 4810 metri della sua vetta. È un crocevia della nostra storia, perché ai suoi piedi sono passati soldati, mercanti e pellegrini, e i suoi ghiacciai e le sue rocce hanno affascinato viaggiatori, artisti e scienziati. È il Monte Bianco, il massiccio più alto d'Europa. La prima ascensione ai 4810 metri della cima è stata compiuta nel 1786 da Jacques Balmat e Michel-Gabriel Paccard.
