Throughout his career, Henri Matisse used imagery as a means of engaging critically with poetry and prose by a diverse range of authors. Kathryn Brown offers a groundbreaking account of Matisse's position in the literary cross-currents of 20th-century France and explores ways in which reading influenced the artist's work in a range of media. This study argues that the livre d'artiste became the privileged means by which Matisse enfolded literature into his own idiom and demonstrated the centrality of his aesthetic to modernist debates about authorship and creativity. By tracing the compositional and interpretive choices that Matisse made as a painter, print maker, and reader in the field of book production, this study offers a new theoretical account of visual art's capacity to function as a form of literary criticism and extends debates about the gendering of 20th-century bibliophilia. Brown also demonstrates the importance of Matisse's self-placement in relation to the French literary canon in the charged political climate of the Second World War and its aftermath. Through a combination of archival resources, art history, and literary criticism, this study offers a new interpretation of Matisse's artist's books and will be of interest to art historians, literary scholars, and researchers in book history and modernism.

Celui que Bernanos appelait « le plus grand peut-être de nos écrivains vivants », a déjà donné lieu à une abondante littérature et on hésite si, à travers tant d'exégèses, tant d'interprétations, Montherlant cherche plus à se découvrir ou à s'expliquer. Il ne ressemble à aucun autre ; il ne sort ni de l'Université, ni du monde des affaires, ni de l'administration, ni de la diplomatie ; il n'occupe aucune fonction dans l'édition, dans la critique, dans les jurys littéraires, dans les organisations culturelles ou professionnelles, nationales ou internationales, non plus que dans les professions libérales. Enfin, il prend la littérature au sérieux, considérant que l'écrivain, par cela même qu'il écrit, assume une responsabilité morale dans la cité, et que son devoir premier est d'en prendre conscience. C'est à ce trait, sans doute, que se référait Aragon en écrivant : « J'ai le plus grand respect des hommes qui représentent vraiment la France ; et, dans la littérature, je compte parmi eux Henry de Montherlant. On n'est pas plus Français que lui. » Au moment où « Fils de personne » reparaît à la scène, et ou les « Essais » entrent dans la bibliothèque de la Pléiade, « Montherlant ou l'homme encombré de Dieu » s'efforce de découvrir, dans la pensée de l'écrivain, dans son œuvre, dans sa manière d'être, les bases et les raisons d'une exigence morale, presque sans équivalent dans la littérature française d'aujourd'hui. L'étude en est conduite avec une vigilance et une information, qui font de ce livre un ouvrage tout à fait à part, une manière de somme ou, si l'on veut, une thèse sur un phénomène d'une extrême rareté et de la plus grande conséquence : un écrivain pur. L'auteur s'est pourtant interdit d'interroger autre chose que l'œuvre même, et l'a étudiée, en quelque sorte, comme s'il s'agissait d'un écrivain mort — à la différence près, justement, que Montherlant est bien vivant, et surgit en personne pour réagir avec vivacité à certaines idées de l'auteur. Il s'en faut que les deux voix soient toujours d'accord, on le verra, et c'est ce qui donne à ce portrait-dialogue son intérêt exceptionnel. Une abondante illustration, inédite en librairie, permet au lecteur de restituer au dialogue l'allure concrète et familière d'une rencontre. On verra que Montherlant justifie le mot d'André Gide : « C'est un seigneur des lettres ».
