“American crime fiction fans will welcome the opportunity to sample the short fiction of some worthy Canadian authors.” —Publishers Weekly Following the success of Toronto Noir, the Noir Series explores new Canadian terrain, featuring both English and Francophone authors. Like the city it springs from, Montreal Noir is an intriguing mix of culture, identities, and neighborhoods with one thing in common: the dark side of human nature. This collection presents stories by Patrick Senécal, Tess Fragoulis, Howard Shrier, Michel Basilières, Robert Pobi, Samuel Archibald, Geneviève Lefebvre, Ian Truman, Johanne Seymour, Arjun Basu, Martin Michaud, Melissa Yi, Catherine McKenzie, Peter Kirby, and Brad Smith. “Montreal solidifies its reputation as the epicentre for Canadian noir in a strong new anthology.” —Quill & Quire “Brings together a bicultural roster of talent by some of the city’s best crime-fiction specialists, with tales from the city’s many neighbourhoods.” —Toronto Star “An impressive roster . . . Stories from across the many sub-genres of mystery: police procedural, thriller, private eye, psychological suspense, and hard-boiled crime.” —Montreal Review of Books “Whether it’s the quirkiness of the characters, the ingenuity of the puzzles, or the big hearts inside some of the darkest villains, noir’s different north of the border.” —Kirkus Reviews

Youth In Conflict With The Law Fourth Edition written by Denise Whitehead and has been published by Canadian Scholars’ Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-06 with Law categories.

Now in its fourth edition, Youth in Conflict with the Law provides a thorough background on the social development of children and youth and the legal responses to young persons who are involved with crime in Canada. While maintaining the sharp focus and the discussion-provoking features that made earlier editions so popular, authors Denise Whitehead and Mark D. Hunter guide students through the important distinction between punishment and a restorative justice approach—a crucial understanding for those who are the first point of contact with youth. Highlighting the important role of police involvement from first contact to youth justice court, this new edition delves deeply into current issues relating to race and ethnicity, mental health, and the Black Lives Matter movement as well as the important intersection between youth criminal justice and child and family services. New to this edition are updated statistics on youth crime and references to current youth criminal legislation. Featuring informative sidebars, real case briefs, and “In the News” sections, and accompanied by an updated instructor’s guide, this accessibly written text is an excellent resource for students in police foundations programs and training courses.

One of the earliest Canadian noir novels, Sugar-Puss on Dorchester Street tells the story of Gisele Lepine, beautiful farmer’s daughter who leaves her sleepy faming community for the neon lights of Montreal. In the fast-paced city, dreams quickly turn to nightmares as the young ‘farmette’ finds herself surrounded by drug-dealers, newspapermen, nightclub owners, chorus girls and a fatherly boxer who is well past his prime. It’s all a bit too much for innocent Gisele, who hasn’t yet had to deal with the violence that is to come. All becomes a whirlwind set in the post-war ‘open city’ in which burlesque houses were plentiful, Dorchester Street was lined with nightclubs and Decarie Boulevard served as Canada’s Sunset Strip.Newspaperman Al Palmer covered Montreal’s nightlife and criminal world—so very often intertwined—beginning in the 1940s. Published in 1949, Sugar-Puss on Dorchester Street, Palmer’s only novel, appeared the year before Montreal Confidential, his infamous ‘low down on the big town’.Will Straw is Professor of Communications at McGill University and Director of the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada. He is the author of Cyanide and Sin: Visualizing Crime in 1950s America and over a hundred articles on media and urban life. The consulting editor for the Ricochet series is Brian Busby. Translating Montreal written by Sherry Simon and has been published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-10-10 with Social Science categories.

Translating Montreal follows the trajectories of adventurous cultural translators such as Malcolm Reid, F.R. Scott, and A.M. Klein - pioneers of the 1950s and 1960s - Pierre Anctil, whose translations from Yiddish to French are emblematic of the dramatic reroutings now occurring across the Montreal landscape, and contemporary writer-translators such as Gail Scott, Erin Mouré, Jacques Brault, Michel Garneau, Nicole Brossard, and Emile Ollivier. Simon argues that translation is a dynamic and subtle tool for analysing cultural contact. An original take on cultural relations in the city, Translating Montreal explores the emergence of the "new" Montrealer. No longer "Franco-Québécois," "Anglo-Québécois," "immigrant," or "ethnic," the new Montrealer is a citizen of a mixed and cosmopolitan city.
