Die Musikkritik und die musikbezogenen Schriften der sogenannten Neudeutschen sind Thema dieser Studie. Als Neudeutsche Schule wird die lockere Gruppierung von deutschen und französischen bzw. französischsprachigen Komponisten des 19. Jahrhunderts bezeichnet, zu der vor allem Richard Wagner, Hector Berlioz, Franz Liszt und am Rande auch Robert Schumann und Schüler wie Hans von Bülow zählen. Untersucht werden sowohl die neudeutschen Schriften zu Beethovens Werk als auch die auf eigene Kompositionen bezogenen Texte der genannten Autoren. Im Mittelpunkt steht hier zum einen die Frage nach der durch die Erinnerung an Beethoven inspirierten progressiven Musikästhetik in Texten der Neudeutschen. Zum anderen behandelt der Band anhand der neudeutschen Beethoven-Rezeption die sich wandelnden Strategien des Medientransfers in Bezug auf die Versprachlichung von Musik nach 1800.

The music reviews of Robert Schumann and Richard Wagner are central documents of 19th-century German musical culture. Brahms in the Priesthood of Art: Gender and Art Religion in the Nineteenth-Century German Musical Imagination explores the intersection of gender, art religion (Kunstreligion) and other aesthetic currents in Brahms reception of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In particular, it focuses on the theme of the self-sacrificing musician devoted to his art, or "priest of music," with its quasi-mystical and German Romantic implications of purity seemingly at odds with the lived reality of Brahms's bourgeois existence. While such German Romantic notions of art religion informed the thinking on musical purity and performance, after the failed socio-political revolutions of 1848/49, and in the face of scientific developments, the very concept of musical priesthood was questioned as outmoded. Furthermore, its essential gender ambiguity, accommodating such performing mothers as Clara Schumann and Amalie Joachim, could suit the bachelor Brahms but leave the composer open to speculation. Supportive critics combined elements of masculine and feminine values with a muddled rhetoric of prophets, messiahs, martyrs, and other art-religious stereotypes to account for the special status of Brahms and his circle. Detractors tended to locate these stereotypes in a more modern, fin-de-siècle psychological framework that questioned the composer's physical and mental well-being. In analyzing these receptions side by side, this book revises the accepted image of Brahms, recovering lost ambiguities in his reception. It resituates him not only in a romanticized priesthood of art, but also within the cultural and gendered discourses overlooked by the absolute music paradigm.

English summary: Music of the fifteenth century shows a change in style, the origin of which contemporary historical and theoretical sources place in England. At the same time as English characteristics appear in the music of the new style, the ideas of humanism spead throughout Europe. However, both developments are difficult to grasp in musical terms; broadly speaking they are related to a new perception of music as sound (rather than arithmetic) and to the regional and temporary delimitation of the new style. The life, work and environment of John Dunstaple lend themselves to explore these developments, as his name is often mentioned in relation to the new style in theoretical writings of the fifteenth century, and in musical sources it is used as a marker for the English origin of a composition. German description: Das 15. Jahrhundert zeigt einen Stilwandel in der Musik, dessen Ursprung in zeitgenossischen historischen und theoretischen Quellen in England gesehen wird. Gleichzeitig mit der Ubernahme englischer Merkmale in der Musik des neuen Stils breiten sich von Italien die Ideen des Humanismus in ganz Europa aus. From the mid-15th to the late 16th century, the polyphonic mass was considered both in practical and theoretical terms to be the central form of expression of Western art music, within which key compositional developments took place. Around 1500, moreover, there developed a sensitivity for the effective use and functionalisation of polyphonic music in both spiritual and secular ceremonies and rituals. Ludwig Nohl (1831-1885), einer der meistgelesenen Musikschriftsteller seiner Zeit, steht mit seinen zahlreichen Schriften zu Komponisten wie Mozart, Wagner, Liszt und Beethoven im Spannungsfeld dieser Entwicklung. Diese Schrift eröffnet einen Blick in die Lebensgeschichte des heute fast vergessenen Autors und schließt damit ein Forschungsdesiderat. Sie zeichnet Nohls Weg nach, seine Verehrung Vischers, sein Wagnerianertum, seine Freundschaft zu Franz Liszt.
