The past takes on its most eloquent form when the people that have lived it, tell their own stories. This is an unusual book of history, which brings back the hopes and the fears of the hungry and penniless during the Great Depression. Dust storms that turned day into night, and the parched prairies into a dust bowl, broke the spirits of many. Rusting pumps marked water wells that were no more, and abandoned homes and farm-steads remained as monuments to futility. Ride with the truck drivers in the building of the great Fort Peck Dam. Follow the action and the danger that came with every precipitous curve. True History, set in Montana, and written with authority for readers of all ages, it is exciting reading and rings with the truth of experience that came from the... DREAMS, DUST, AND DEPRESSION

Monuments Of Merv written by Georgina Herrman and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Architecture categories.

The survival of the mudbrick monuments of Merv against all the odds is little short of a miracle. Mudbrick and rammed earth are not building materials famed for their longevity, rather for their economy. However, some buildings of the Merv oasis in the Karakum desert in Turkmenistan have survived for more than seven centuries and some, unbelievably, for a millennium. Mud was the building material of choice, wonderfully flexible and a superb insulator, ideal for the extremes of the Central Asian climate, and one used by the architects of Merv with ingenuity and virtuosity to construct a wide variety of vaults and domes. The survivng monuments include palatial residences, small houses, summer pavilions and watch towers, as well as the earliest examples of tall conical icehouses. Perhaps the most remarkable are the extraordinary corrugated buildings, which, like the icehouses, dominate the flat landscape of the oasis. These are a distinctly Central Asian type of building with a surprising dearth of parallels elsewhere. Merv's key position during the eighth and ninth centuries may suggest that these remarkable buildings originated in the oasis, and they continued to be built through the Seljuk period. They present a unique record of an otherwise lost architechtural heritage and are of such importance that they form a major part of Merv's application to UNESCO for World Heritage Status. Merv was, of course, one of the great cosmopolitan capitals of the day, a centre of learning, industry and of long-distance trade: it was strategically located on the Great Silk Road'.

Spomenik Monument Database written by Donald Niebyl and has been published by Fuel Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Architecture categories.

Spomenik - the Serbo-Croat/Slovenian word for monument - refers to the pioneering abstract memorials built in Josip Tito's Yugoslavia between the 1960s and the 1990s, marking the horror of occupation by Axis forces and the triumph of their defeat during World War II. Through these imaginative creations, a forward-looking socialist society, free of ethnic tensions, was envisaged. This publication brings together more than 80 examples of these stunning brutalist monuments. Each has been extensively photographed and researched by the author to make this book the most comprehensive survey available of this obscure and fascinating architectural phenomenon. A fold-out map on the reverse of the dust jacket shows the exact location of each spomenik using GPS coordinates.
