We, all of us, are hard-wired to fear the unknown, and what is more unknown than death, or rather, what happens after death? While each of the world's philosophies has its own interpretation of the subject, there is really no telling for certain. In the six stories that follow, the authors not only consider death as such, but also whether there are things worse than death.

When someone says "horror classics", we usually think "Mary Shelley" and "Bram Stoker". Russian writers hardly ever come to mind. The Russians are known for history and drama, but not necessarily for suspense, paranormal and ghost stories. The following collection is proof that such pieces do, in fact, exist in Russian literature. Unattainable wealth, unrequited love, unlimited power, a world found and lost, a walk along the boundary between dream and reality... All this and more is offered to you by the creative team behind "Moonlit Tales of the Macabre". We are proud to bring you this collection of classics and hope it serves as a new portal into the fascinating and largely unexplored world of Russian literature.

He was the premier writer of horror fiction in the first half of the 20th Century, perhaps the major American practitioner of the art between the time of Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King. Born into an upper middle class family in Providence, Rhode Island, Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) had a lonely childhood, but read voraciously from his earliest years. He soon became interested in science and astronomy and began penning stories, poetry, and essays in great profusion, publishing them himself when no other market was available. The advent of Weird Tales in 1923 gave him a small outlet for his work, and he attracted a large number of followers, with whom he exchanged literally tens of thousands of letters, many of them quite lengthy. A number of these young correspondents eventually became professional writers and editors themselves. Lovecraft's fame began spreading beyond fandom with the publication of his first significant collection, The Outsider and Others, in 1939, two years after his untimely death. Book jacket.

M. R. James (1862-1936) redefined the ghost story for the new century by abandoning many of the formal Gothic clichés of his predecessors and using more realistic contemporary settings. However, James's protagonists and plots tend to reflect his own antiquarian interests. Accordingly, he is known as the originator of the "antiquarian ghost story". He was was a medievalist scholar and provost of King's College, Cambridge (1905–18), and of Eton College (1918–36). Though James's work as a medievalist is still highly regarded, he is best remembered for his ghost stories, which are regarded as among the best in the genre.
